The highly anticipated 2024 Toyota Prado is scheduled to make its debut later this year, with availability in showrooms expected next year.

Despite undergoing two facelifts and various model year updates, the Land Cruiser Prado (J150) has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction in 2009. In contrast, the closely-related Lexus GX, which shares many similarities, recently underwent a complete redesign after nearly 14 years. It is anticipated that the Toyota counterpart will also receive a similar update in the near future. Although specific details from the Japanese automaker are limited, we have gathered all the available information about the highly anticipated upcoming Land Cruiser.

2024 Toyota Prado Release Date

According to a recent report, the new model, rumored to be named the ‘250 Series’, will be unveiled in late 2023. Initially planned for a release in late 2022, the launch of the next-generation Prado was delayed by over a year, marking a significant update to the current model that has been on the market for nearly 15 years. First deliveries of the Prado are anticipated to commence in April 2024.

Toyota has strategically unveiled shadowed images featuring the new Prado model in conjunction with the revered 1950s FJ Series LandCruiser, aligning with their planned release schedule. While Toyota has not explicitly confirmed these images as depicting the upcoming Prado, they did make a reference to 65 years of off-road heritage. Considering the renowned FJ40’s introduction in 1960, it is highly likely that the new Prado will be introduced as a 2024 or 2025 model.

Powertrain:

As Japanese media outlets persist in their speculation regarding the engine choices for the upcoming Prado, Best Car provides a report suggesting that the current model’s 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine is expected to be retained.

On the other hand, the inclusion of a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain in the Prado is highly probable, marking a significant first for the model. Toyota is expected to introduce the ‘Hybrid Max’ configuration, which is already utilized in the Tacoma pickup truck and the newly released Crown SUV. This hybrid system combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a rear-mounted electric motor.

The same hybrid setup has already been confirmed for the recently unveiled Lexus GX, which is based on the Prado. In the Lexus GX, the hybrid powertrain is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Prado, built on the ‘TNGA-F’ body-on-frame 4×4 platform, is expected to adopt a similar configuration, featuring full-time all-wheel drive, a low-range transfer case, and a locking center differential.
