Michael Schiebe, CEO of AMG and overseer of the G-Class and Maybach units, recently shared insights about the ongoing appeal of the used G-Class during a media roundtable in France. He revealed that an impressive 80% of all G-Classes ever produced are still on the road, a testament to their robust construction and timeless appeal.
Schiebe elaborated on the manufacturing ethos of the G-Class, stating, “The G-Class uses more robust materials compared to typical compact cars, which contributes significantly to its long service life. Essentially, owning a G-Class from the late 1970s could negate the need for several compact cars over the same period, thanks to its unparalleled durability.”
In 2023, Mercedes celebrated the milestone of manufacturing the 500,000th G-Class. Remarkably, over 400,000 of these are still actively driven, showcasing their superior longevity compared to other luxury vehicles, such as the Porsche 911—of which only about 70% are still roadworthy.
As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, Schiebe discussed the future, particularly the electric G580 with EQ Technology, though he didn’t disclose expected market shares. He remains optimistic about its acceptance among dealers and customers, emphasizing that Mercedes-Benz prioritizes customer needs, “Whether it’s providing powerful, efficient V-8 engines or introducing innovative electric models, we strive to meet our customers’ demands.”
The introduction of the electric G-Wagen presents new opportunities for Mercedes-Benz to attract customers who haven’t previously considered a used G-Class due to preferences for more environmentally friendly vehicles. “This new model allows us to reach a broader audience, appealing to those who value the G-Class’s iconic design but prefer a sustainable driving option,” Schiebe noted.
Looking ahead to 2025, the G-Class will be available in the U.S. with alternatives to the traditional V-8 powertrain for the first time since it was introduced to the American market in 2002. The G550 will feature a cutting-edge turbocharged inline-six engine, enhanced with mild-hybrid technology, which promises a more dynamic and efficient driving experience than its V-8 predecessor.
