In an official announcement, Toyota Australia has confirmed that the 2024 Toyota Hilux will be equipped with a mild-hybrid option, which will be available in the first half of 2024. This mild-hybrid system will be integrated into the existing turbodiesel powertrain of the vehicle.
The current Toyota Hilux, which is now in its eighth generation, was first introduced in 2015. It has since undergone two facelifts, one in 2017 and another in 2020.
Although Toyota has not officially announced the next-generation Hilux, there are rumors suggesting that it may be unveiled in 2025. It is anticipated that the new midsize pickup will share its TNGA platform with the US version of the Toyota Tacoma and incorporate a greater level of electrification.

Toyota will be integrating its hybrid technology with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission in the new Hilux. This combination includes a 48V battery, a small electric motor-generator, and other essential components.
Aside from providing enhanced fuel efficiency, the hybrid system will offer features such as a stop/start system, improved off-road performance, and reduced levels of noise, vibration, and harshness.
The inclusion of hybrid technology will not compromise the capabilities of the Hilux, as the 4×4 models will retain the same abilities as the current model, including a braked towing capacity of 3,500kg. Since tow bars are installed in 98% of new Hilux vehicles sold, the towing capacity will be a significant consideration for prospective buyers of the hybrid Hilux.
