In 1955, Dodge introduced its C Series – Dodge Truck – , marking a significant overhaul of the company’s truck lineup since the wartime production era. Although the range enjoyed moderate success, remaining in production for only six years, these days it is rare to come across these trucks in any variation.
In May, a tow truck was featured among the vehicles up for auction in Indianapolis by Mecum. By chance, we have come across it now, a few weeks later. For those of you who appreciate rugged and well-used vehicles, this unexpected discovery may be considered fortunate. Surprisingly, the truck remains unsold even after receiving a bid of $30,000.
Two notable features immediately catch one’s attention when observing this truck. Firstly, its body stands out with its weathered appearance, showcasing patches of rust, an uneven brown color, and fading Mike’s Garage signage adorning its sides. Secondly, the wheels are particularly eye-catching, demanding attention with their distinct presence.
While the specific dimensions of the wheels remain undisclosed, what cannot be overlooked is the colossal size of the tires enveloping them, rendering everything else seemingly insignificant in comparison. Astonishingly, each wheel is adorned with 52 inches (1.3 meters) of Michelin rubber, propelling the C Series to an astonishing height that likely exceeded Dodge’s original vision.
During its original production, this truck model provided customers with four engine options, with the largest being the 331ci (5.4-liter) V8. However, in its current custom-built configuration, the truck conceals beneath its hood a crate Chevy powerplant of undisclosed power, boasting a robust 454ci (7.4-liter) displacement. This mighty engine is mated to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, ensuring seamless control over the truck’s performance.
The truck’s interior has undergone minimal modifications in terms of modernization, maintaining its original charm. The consistent use of brown materials throughout the interior creates a seamless harmony with its rugged exterior, capturing the essence of its intended aesthetic.
Although the Dodge truck’s age dates back nearly seven decades, its current form presents a relatively newer iteration. It holds a 2016 Assembled Vehicle title and is built on a 1989 Chevy K3500 chassis. Remarkably, the truck has only accumulated just under 500 miles (805 km) on its odometer, signifying its relatively limited usage and exceptional condition.
