As of now, Volkswagen’s electric lineup in the United States includes the ID4 SUV, ID Buzz van, and the upcoming ID7 sedan, all built on the versatile MEB platform. The ID2all also shared this platform, albeit in a compact form. The new ID GTI Concept, promising front-wheel drive and a slew of innovative features, hints at a production model likely set for release around 2026.
The ID GTI reimagines the traditional GTI formula, where “I” now stands for “intelligence,” not “injection.” This change signifies a shift towards advanced vehicle dynamics managed by an onboard computer. The concept also inherits the electronically controlled front-axle differential lock from the latest Golf models, allowing drivers to mimic the driving feel of iconic GTI versions from the past. Volkswagen describes this feature as a “time machine,” offering an engaging, albeit synthetic, driving experience.
Dimensionally, the ID GTI Concept expands slightly over the ID2all, featuring a length of 161.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.4 inches. It sports 20-inch wheels and performance tires, maintaining the compact efficiency of its electric platform. The design nods to GTI heritage with its signature red accents, honeycomb intakes, and a black front splitter, alongside modern features like a lit-up VW badge and a front light bar.
Inside, the ID GTI Concept blends tradition with technology. The central control, shaped like a golf ball, allows drivers to select driving profiles, while the digital dashboard can be customized, including a “Vintage” mode that emulates the look of a Mark 2 Golf GT. The car also introduces an augmented reality display, offering dynamic information for both driver and passenger, and updates the infotainment system with tactile controls for improved usability.
The interior also features a modern take on the GTI’s iconic plaid upholstery, now called “Jack-e,” covering sporty new seats. The electric platform’s efficiency is evident in the ample storage space, including an underfloor compartment and additional charging areas beneath the rear seats.
While Volkswagen hasn’t released specific details on the ID GTI’s range or power, the ID2all’s figures suggest promising performance capabilities. VW America’s CEO Pablo Di Si expresses hope for bringing the electric GTI to the U.S. market at an accessible price point, aiming for around $25,000 to avoid becoming a niche offering. The timeline for the ID GTI’s arrival remains tentative, with potential production dates ranging from 2026 to 2027.
