The latest chapter in the Jimny’s storied history unfolded at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, where a daring project from the students of Nippon Automobile College (NATS) captured the imagination of the automotive world. The NATS Shakotan Jimny J1, as it’s been christened, is a bold reinterpretation of off-road aesthetics, drawing inspiration from the muscular stance of the Toyota Mega Cruiser – Japan’s answer to the Hummer.
This project is more than just a tribute to automotive giants; it’s a fusion of history and innovation. The Shakotan Jimny J1 owes its existence to a creative blend of elements from the Suzuki Escudo and the first-generation Suzuki Jimny. At its core, the vehicle utilizes the robust chassis of the Escudo SUV, powered by its formidable H25A V6 gasoline engine. This choice of powertrain is a nod to the enduring legacy of Suzuki’s engineering, delivering reliable performance and a hint of nostalgia.
The body of the Shakotan Jimny J1, however, is where the students’ ingenuity truly shines. Meticulously crafted by merging two Jimny J1 units, the vehicle presents an intriguing low-riding profile that defies traditional off-road design conventions. This unconventional approach is further accentuated by the addition of air suspension, allowing the chassis to sit almost flush with the ground – a stark contrast to the raised stances typical of off-road vehicles.
Visually, the Shakotan Jimny J1 is a head-turner, challenging perceptions and drawing the eye with its distinctive silhouette. Yet, it’s not just about the exterior. Inside, the vehicle balances the ruggedness of its design with practical considerations.
