In the dynamic world of the automotive industry, some discontinued cars defy the odds and continue to make their mark on sales charts long after their production has ceased. These enduring models, recognized as ‘discontinued models,’ have demonstrated remarkable staying power, especially within the Stellantis brand in the U.S. market. The complete sales data for 2023 reveals that several such models are still persistently lingering in the marketplace.

The Dodge Viper stands out as a prime example of this phenomenon. Despite its production halting in August 2017 at Detroit’s Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, the Viper saw a surprising resurgence in 2023, with two units sold in the final quarter. This marks a 100% increase from the previous year, where only a single Viper was sold. Tracing back further, four units were sold in both 2021 and 2020, highlighting the model’s enduring appeal.

On the other end of the excitement spectrum, the Jeep Patriot also made a surprising appearance in the fourth quarter of 2023 sales, despite its last production run at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in December 2016. The sales for this crossover plummeted by 75% compared to 2022, when four units were sold.

The Chrysler 200 also surfaced unexpectedly in the 2023 sales data. With four units sold throughout the year, three of which were in the last quarter, the compact sedan saw its sales double from 2022. Production of the 200 ended in December 2016 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan.

Not to be outdone, the Chrysler Town & Country minivan also found buyers in 2023, with two units sold in the final quarter. This was a notable development given that no units were sold in 2022. The last Town & Country rolled off the production line in 2016 at the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada.

Dodge’s persistence in the market was further exemplified by the Dart, with three units sold in the latter part of 2023. The Dart, closely related to the Chrysler 200, had slightly better sales in 2022, with four units sold. The final Dart was produced in September 2016 at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois.

The Dodge Journey also continued its journey in 2023, with 36 units sold, marking a significant decline from the 194 units sold in 2022. The Journey’s production concluded in 2020 at FCA’s Toluca factory in Mexico.

The Caravan, another resilient model, matched its 2022 sales with 27 units sold in 2023. This model was discontinued in 2020 from the Windsor plant in Ontario, Canada.

The allure of Italian sports cars remained, as evidenced by Alfa Romeo selling a 4C and Fiat shipping 28 units of the 124 Spider convertible. Other notable mentions include the Fiat 500L with seven units and the compact 500 with 16 hatchbacks sold.

This intriguing trend of ‘discontinued cars’ not only highlights the lasting appeal of certain models but also reflects the unique dynamics of the automotive market, where past legends continue to find a place in the present.
