After the 2023 model year, Mazda will bid farewell to the Mazda CX-9. This three-row family vehicle made its debut in 2016, marking a significant shift for the Japanese brand as it ventured into the upscale market, redefining the concept of luxury. With its notable power (for its time) and impressive fuel efficiency, the CX-9 provided a comfortable and secure ride for families. It served as a preview of the Mazda we recognize today, making it a pioneering model deserving of recognition. Let’s raise a glass to this trailblazer.

Farewell to the Legendary Mazda CX-9

The demise of the CX-9 is undoubtedly attributed to the recent introduction of the CX-90. We had the opportunity to test drive the non-hybrid variant of this three-row SUV, and it exceeded the expectations set by the CX-9 all those years ago. The CX-90 proves itself as a formidable competitor to established luxury SUVs from Germany and might even outshine certain luxury brands hailing from Japan.

During our initial drive of the CX-9 several years ago, we were genuinely impressed by the cabin’s high-quality materials and the overall driving experience. The review from that time highlighted the CX-9’s impressive driving experience, noting that when in Sport mode and with manual gear shifting, the vehicle showcased a delightful performance. It effortlessly navigated corners with an elegance and stability that was rarely observed in three-row crossovers.

The CX-90 represents a significant improvement in this aspect, introducing a new turbocharged inline-six engine and offering fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. With the inline-six engine, power has been enhanced from 280 horsepower to 340 horsepower, while still delivering better fuel efficiency across all trims. The 280-horsepower CX-90 achieves 24 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined, while the 340-horsepower CX-90 achieves 23 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. As for the PHEV models, specific fuel economy figures have not yet been released, but they are expected to be impressive. Additionally, the PHEV system will provide 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which will be highly appreciated by drivers.

Farewell to the Legendary Mazda CX-9

The CX-90 represents the culmination of Mazda’s efforts and the evolution of the CX-9’s legacy. While the CX-9 laid the foundation, the CX-90 takes it to new heights. It builds upon the success of its predecessor and allows Mazda to perfect the formula. We must acknowledge and appreciate the CX-9 for paving the way for the CX-90’s success.
