In a highly anticipated reveal, 2023 Toyota Sales has outpaced Volkswagen Group’s 9.24 million vehicle sales in 2023, maintaining its position as the world’s top-selling automaker for the fourth consecutive year. Toyota’s impressive performance is marked by a staggering 11,233,039 vehicles sold last year, representing a 7.2% increase from the previous year.

Breaking down these numbers, 2023 Toyota Sales, along with its luxury arm Lexus, sold 10,307,395 vehicles, achieving a 7.7% growth over the previous year and setting a new company record. Meanwhile, Toyota’s subsidiary Daihatsu also showed robust performance, with sales growing by 3.2% to 790,441 units. However, it was a challenging year for the Hino division, responsible for commercial vehicles, where sales saw a 9.8% decrease, settling at 135,203 units.

2023 Toyota Sales and Affiliate Performance

The company faced some governance challenges involving testing procedures for cars and engines across two subsidiaries and affiliate Toyota Industries. These issues have raised concerns over the potential impact on Toyota’s reputation for quality and safety. Addressing these concerns, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, at a recent event, apologized for the irregularities at Hino Motors, Daihatsu, and Toyota Industries, acknowledging the inconvenience and worry this has caused customers and stakeholders.

Internationally, 2023 Toyota Sales reached new heights, with 8,928,230 cars shipped outside of Japan, a 4.1% increase from the previous year. The bulk of these sales came from the main Toyota and Lexus brands, which sold 8,634,425 cars, up by 4.3% from 2022. The United States emerged as the largest single market, with sales of 2,617,033 vehicles, marking a 7% increase.

Lexus, in particular, saw a significant sales boost in 2023, shipping 824,258 cars – a remarkable 132% increase from 2022. North America led these sales, followed by Asia and the domestic Japanese market.

2023 Sales of other automakers

Comparatively, the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis group sold 7.32 million vehicles, a 6.7% increase, securing the third position in global sales. While General Motors has yet to release its figures for 2023, it’s noted that their 2022 sales were 5.93 million vehicles. Stellantis is expected to release its 2023 data on February 15, having delivered 5.84 million vehicles in 2022.

Alongside the impressive 2023 Toyota Sales, Nissan, a fellow Japanese auto powerhouse, has announced a 4.6% rise in global sales, with 3,225,632 vehicles sold over the last year, underscoring the intense competition in the 2023 global automotive market.
