That is what caught the attention of luxury car fans in Tokyo, where cameras recently spotted Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi moving away from her traditional limousine and into Toyota’s newest and most luxurious SUV ever, the Toyota Century SUV.
The imposing motorcade was seen carrying the Prime Minister from her official residence to the National Diet Building before heading to Haneda Airport. Although the convoy included Mercedes-Benz and previous-generation Lexus LS security vehicles, the black Toyota Century SUV clearly stole the spotlight with its powerful and dignified presence.
Why The Limousine Was Replaced
According to Japanese media reports based on government records, the previous third-generation Toyota Century sedan, which entered service in April 2020 during the era of the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, had reached its permitted mileage limit. That made its replacement necessary from both mechanical and security perspectives.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed that the government updates its official fleet according to vehicle condition and other operational factors. However, he refused to reveal the exact purchase cost or security specifications of the Prime Minister’s new SUV, saying such details fall under Japan’s national security considerations.
For comparison, the civilian version of the Toyota Century SUV starts in Japan at 27 million yen, or around 167,100 US dollars, before adding any special protection equipment.
A Government SUV With A Serious Presence
The Prime Minister’s Century SUV has a darker and more formal look than the versions sold to private customers. Instead of the signature two-tone paint often associated with Century models, this government vehicle comes in a full black finish that gives it a more commanding presence.
Its emergency lights are carefully hidden behind the black front grille, along with strobe lighting used during official motorcades. A special front mirror has also been added to support security operations.
Although Toyota and the Japanese government have not shared the full protection details, the SUV appears to ride on dark multi-spoke wheels with thick protective tires. It is also reasonable to assume that the windows and body panels include advanced ballistic protection, as expected from a vehicle assigned to a prime minister.
Why Japan Chose An SUV
The move from a classic sedan to an SUV also makes practical sense. The higher body makes it easier for officials to enter and exit the vehicle without bending down, which matters during official appearances and media coverage. It also gives rear passengers more space, more headroom, and a quieter environment for work or private conversations on the move.
Under the skin, the Toyota Century SUV uses Toyota’s modern TNGA-K platform and a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The system produces a combined 400 horsepower and sends power to all four wheels through an e-CVT transmission and Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel-drive system. Its 21.3 kWh battery allows up to 69 km of pure electric driving, making it especially suitable for quiet movements inside Tokyo.
