To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the iconic R-Type Continental JAS 949, Bentley has unveiled a unique Continental GT Azure. The JAS 949 is among the 208 units of the R-Type Continental produced, and the new version pays tribute to it.
When it was introduced in 1952, the R-Type Continental was the world’s fastest four-seater luxury saloon. The design of the new one-off JAS 949 pays tribute to this iconic model, with its power line from the front wheel, rear haunch, and roofline taking inspiration from the first generation Continental GT in 2003, as well as subsequent models.
The JAS 949 is more than just a car for Bentley, it’s a cherished piece of history that they have taken great care to preserve. As one of only 208 examples of the R-Type Continental ever built, the JAS 949 is a rare sight on the road today, and its continued existence is a testament to the enduring appeal of this iconic model. The car’s striking design was ahead of its time when it was first introduced in 1952, and it still turns heads today with its sleek lines and elegant curves. Over the years, the JAS 949 has become an important part of Bentley’s heritage, and the company takes great pride in its ownership of this unique vehicle. In many ways, the JAS 949 is a symbol of Bentley’s commitment to preserving the past while embracing the future.
To achieve the modern interpretation of JAS 949, the Continental GT V8 Azure underwent a meticulous hand-painting process in Old English White. The vehicle’s aesthetic was further enhanced with the addition of 22-inch hand-finished wheels in black and polished finish, including the matrix grille, all in bright chrome, which closely resembles the original specification.
Inside the car, the driver and passengers are enveloped in a deep and rich heritage feel thanks to the Cricket Ball leather used throughout the interior. The leather is accentuated by hand-applied piping in Beluga leather. The new Continental GT Azure also features Australian straight grain veneer with a boxwood inlay, which is cross banded and enhanced with a Bentley Mulliner overlay in rich gold. To pay homage to the R-Type Continental, the fascia veneer and interior tread plates are adorned with the silhouette of the classic car, adding the finishing touches to the cabin.
The R-Type Continental JAS 949 is equipped with a 6-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 4566 cc, delivering an output power of 153 bhp at 4000 rpm. It can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 13.6 seconds. In contrast, the Continental GT Azure is powered by a 3996 cc V8 TSI engine with twin-scroll turbochargers. It generates an impressive output power of 542 bhp at 6000 rpm and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 4.0 seconds.
In order to achieve further weight reduction, the engineering team utilized aluminum for the bodywork, window frames, windscreen surround, backlight, seat frames, and bumpers. Additionally, Dunlop Medium Distance Track tires were selected for the vehicle.
