The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R has been upgraded to deliver a powerful 328 horsepower. However, despite this boost, the manual transmission remains unavailable across the Golf lineup, including the performance-oriented R variant. Enhancements to the new model also feature a larger touchscreen and expanded LED lighting.
Availability
Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce the updated 2025 Golf R in showrooms early next year. To build anticipation, the automaker has shared details of this sporty hatchback’s features tailored for the American market.
Pricing
While specific pricing has yet to be announced, Volkswagen has hinted that the starting cost will surpass that of the current model. This higher price point comes with added horsepower and a refreshed design that includes more extensive LED lighting.
Performance and Engine
The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been optimized to generate 328 horsepower, an increase from the 315 horsepower in the current version. Although Volkswagen has not disclosed the exact modifications, the power increase is likely similar to the tuning used in the 20th Anniversary Edition Golf R, adapted for the U.S. market.
The 2025 Golf R accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds, powered by a standard all-wheel-drive system. It remains paired exclusively with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, as the manual gearbox option has been omitted for this model year, aligning with the rest of the updated Golf lineup.
Exterior Design Changes
Spotting the refreshed 2025 Golf R will be easy, thanks to new multi-LED headlights stretching across the front fascia and connecting the headlight units, a design element reminiscent of the electric ID.4. The front bumper has been redesigned with updated air vents, while the sides sport new 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels. At the rear, updates include a redesigned diffuser and round exhaust tips, replacing the previous oval design.
Interior Features
Inside, Volkswagen has upgraded the infotainment system, introducing a 12.9-inch standalone touchscreen equipped with AI capabilities and integration with ChatGPT. Touch-sensitive controls for climate and volume adjustments have also made a comeback. Additionally, Volkswagen has revealed a new Black Edition for the 2025 Golf R. This special edition will feature black accents on the wheels, brake calipers, and badging, living up to its name.
