Imagine a Volkswagen Beetle transformed into a police car – a nightmare for wrongdoers, especially those attempting to flee on foot.

This unique vehicle served on duty in Germany until 1986 and caught the attention of none other than Jerry Seinfeld, who imported it. Since then, it has made notable appearances on various television shows.

Picture this: It’s 1985 in Würzburg, Bavaria, and you’re reveling in the delivery of your new E28 BMW M5. As you shift the manual gearbox into third, enjoying the roar of the inline-six, suddenly, flashing blue lights appear in your rearview mirror. However, this is Germany, not Hazzard County, and evading the law is strictly forbidden. It takes a considerable amount of time for the police to catch up.

Featured on Bring a Trailer, a 1979 Volkswagen Beetle police car is now available for purchase until Thursday, December 14. Yes, you read that correctly – a 45-hp Beetle dressed in a police officer’s uniform. Beware, Teutonic criminals!

This “polizei-kaefer” entered service in 1978, serving as a genuine cop car until 1986. By the end of its service, it likely became the assigned vehicle for those who messed up significant investigations or, perhaps, ran over the police commissioner’s dog.

Being an authentic police service unit, this 1979 Volkswagen Beetle Police Car comes equipped with all the expected accessories: a flashing blue light, a distinctive two-tone European police siren, and a PA system for imploring, “Pull over! Please! Wait up!” Additionally, it features a period-correct Telefunken police radio.

After spending years in storage, comedian Jerry Seinfeld discovered and imported this car to the U.S. It made appearances on his Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee show, as well as Jay Leno’s Garage and Spike Feresten’s Car Matchmaker.

While the interior displays some wear and tear, including genuine burn holes from officers smoking on duty, the exterior underwent repainting just over 15 years ago. Although it cannot be registered in California, it would make a noteworthy addition to any VW collection elsewhere.

Don’t miss your chance to bid on this slow but distinctive patrol car at the no-reserve auction ending on December 14. Head to Bring a Trailer for the opportunity to own a piece of automotive history.
