Suzuki is making its mark in the electric vehicle market with the introduction of its first all-electric model, the Suzuki EV, named the e VITARA. This pioneering vehicle is set to launch across Europe, Japan, and India in 2025, positioning Suzuki firmly in the increasingly competitive EV sector. The e VITARA will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India, which it will share with a Toyota sister model, and is based on the eVX concept revealed earlier in 2023. This development represents a significant milestone as Suzuki seeks to expand its lineup and promote a carbon-neutral future.
The Suzuki EV will be available in three configurations. The base model will feature front-wheel drive paired with a 49-kWh battery, generating a maximum output of 106 kW (142 horsepower) and a torque of 189 Nm. Higher-spec variants will come with a 61-kWh battery, with the middle version delivering 128 kW (172 horsepower) and the same torque. The top variant will include a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, offering 181 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. Suzuki emphasized that the all-wheel-drive version would come with Trail mode for off-road capabilities and a simulated locking differential to enhance grip on rough terrains.
Built on the newly developed HEARTECT-e platform, the e VITARA is optimized for electric powertrains. The design features lightweight construction, high-voltage safety measures, and a spacious interior achieved through the elimination of underfloor members to maximize battery capacity. The single-speed electric drive and efficient eAxle, which integrates the motor and inverter, highlight the vehicle’s advanced engineering. The all-wheel-drive system, called ALLGRIP-e, promises precise and responsive control through the use of independent e-axles.
The e VITARA measures 4.3 meters in length, 1.8 meters in width, and 1.6 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.7 meters and a minimum turning radius of 5.2 meters. Its interior is designed with premium touches, such as leather-like accents on the dashboard, giving it a more upscale feel compared to current Suzuki models. Suzuki also indicated that the cabin quality and layout would surpass expectations set by the brand’s existing lineup.
Production of the e VITARA in India is expected to begin in early 2025, with initial units designated for export to international markets. Plans for further distribution outside of Europe and Japan remain unconfirmed. Industry analysts have highlighted the vehicle’s development ties with Toyota, suggesting a possible Toyota-branded version of the Suzuki EV, though no concrete timeline has been provided.
On the technology front, the e VITARA will feature lithium iron-phosphate batteries known for durability and long-lasting performance. While the manufacturer has not yet released official range figures, early estimates suggest the base model could cover around 320 km (200 miles) on a single charge. The earlier concept model, equipped with a 60-kWh battery, had demonstrated a range of up to 550 kilometers, indicating potential for impressive efficiency in the top variants.
The unveiling of the e VITARA comes as part of Suzuki’s broader electrification strategy, backed by an investment of 2 trillion yen by 2030. This plan includes 500 billion yen dedicated to the development and production of batteries. Although a dedicated EV factory in Gujarat is under construction, with a planned annual capacity of up to one million units, it will not be operational until 2028 or 2029. In the meantime, the existing Gujarat plant will handle production, with ongoing capacity expansions.
Suzuki’s approach aligns with its goal of offering diverse eco-friendly solutions, including hybrids and CNG vehicles. The company emphasized that the e VITARA marks a crucial achievement in their journey toward sustainability and announced plans to broaden the BEV lineup with models tailored to various regional demands.
As Suzuki reveals more details, the anticipation for its first electric vehicle continues to build, setting the stage for a transformative entry into the global EV market.
