Don’t worry about the absence of flying cars just yet, as Hyundai’s UK chief, Michael Cole, assures us they will become a reality before the end of the decade, defying the unfulfilled promises of Back To The Future II.

During a press interview, the UK head of Hyundai, Michael Cole, addressed inquiries from reporters regarding the possibility of flying cars. Cole mentioned the potential for Urban Air Mobility to be utilized for cargo transportation within cities, and potentially for passenger use as well. However, he clarified that such advancements would likely occur towards the end of the current decade, initially on a smaller scale.

At CES 2020, Hyundai showcased autonomous VOTL (vertical take-off and landing) vehicles, demonstrating their commitment to innovation in the field. Additionally, their U.S.-based subsidiary, Supernal, is focused on expediting the progress of Advanced Air Mobility technologies.

Hyundai has forged a partnership with the UK government to introduce its own flying cars for transporting cargo and potentially passengers within cities. Through a collaboration with the Coventry City Council and the UK Government, they are establishing “Air One,” a dedicated hub for vertical take-off and landing aircraft, encompassing delivery drones and air taxis.

Renderings have emerged of electric flying cars, developed in partnership with Supernal, which showcases Hyundai’s foray into this innovative field. Supernal previously unveiled an eVTOL concept resembling a helicopter at the Farnborough International Airshow, offering a glimpse of their forthcoming passenger aircraft. Hyundai’s automotive designers drew inspiration from the graceful flight of butterflies, incorporating a five-seater cabin that embraces the principles of biomimicry.
