Saudi Arabia is steering confidently into the future of smart mobility, preparing to roll out self-driving taxis on its city streets. It’s a bold and visionary step that reflects the Kingdom’s ambition to take the lead in autonomous driving. The Transport General Authority (TGA) has officially opened the door for local and international companies to apply and be part of this groundbreaking “robotaxi” pilot project — a glimpse into what tomorrow’s urban transport could look like.
But this initiative is not just about showcasing cutting-edge technology. It’s about creating a safe, efficient, and reliable ecosystem for passengers. The TGA explained that licensed companies will need to bring forward innovative solutions that put safety first and ensure seamless operations — all under a carefully designed regulatory framework. Applications will be submitted electronically via a QR code, and every proposal will be evaluated against strict technical benchmarks.
To make sure the experiment succeeds, the TGA has set the bar high. Among the requirements:
Safety and Cybersecurity: Vehicles must be equipped with advanced protection for passengers and pedestrians, along with strong defenses against cyberattacks and data breaches.
Adaptability to Local Conditions: Cars need to prove they can handle Saudi Arabia’s tough climate — from scorching heat to frequent dust storms.
Localization and Training: Clear strategies to train Saudi talent to operate and maintain these advanced vehicles.
Robust Infrastructure: Detailed plans for control centers and monitoring facilities to keep everything running smoothly.
Regulatory Compliance: Full alignment with land transport regulations and data protection standards.
The potential benefits stretch far beyond convenience. Removing human error — responsible for more than 85% of traffic accidents — could save countless lives. Smarter traffic management promises to ease congestion and improve the flow of city life. And for seniors and people with disabilities, robotaxis could mean greater independence and easier access to mobility.
On the economic front, this move places Saudi Arabia right in line with global trends. The autonomous vehicle market is projected to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars by 2026, growing at more than 18% annually. With visionary projects like NEOM and The Line paving the way, the Kingdom is perfectly positioned to adopt these technologies on a large scale, attract international investment, and cement its role as a global hub for innovation and future mobility.
