Toyota Supra Lives On!

Rumors have circulated suggesting that BMW plans to discontinue the Z4 by 2026, marking the end of its roadster without a planned successor. This has raised questions about the fate of its closely related counterpart, the Toyota Supra. Despite the potential end of the Z4, Toyota officials have assured that the Supra name is not going anywhere.

Sean Hanley, Vice President for Marketing and Sales at Toyota Australia, confirmed that Toyota has no intention of discontinuing the Supra. He emphasized that BMW’s decisions would not influence Toyota’s future plans for the Supra, adding that the speculation about the Supra’s end was unfounded. Hanley hinted that the current generation of the Supra might undergo changes, possibly in shape or design, but the Toyota Supra brand itself will remain a key part of Toyota’s lineup. His comments suggest that the Supra could evolve, potentially expanding into a broader range of models beyond its current form.

The Supra’s production has been closely linked with BMW’s Z4, as both cars are manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria. With BMW potentially ending the Z4’s production in 2026, it has raised questions about whether Toyota will follow suit. However, Hanley clarified that BMW’s actions will not affect Toyota’s decisions. Toyota is committed to keeping the Supra alive, possibly by developing the next generation in-house or through new partnerships.

Hanley’s comments were made during the Bathurst 1000 event, where he introduced a life-sized clay model of the GR Supra that will compete in Supercars racing from 2026. He also pointed out that the Supra would continue to race on tracks for years, even beyond the lifespan of its current body shape. Toyota’s participation in Supercars racing, after a 20-year absence, is seen as a strategic move to boost the brand’s appeal, especially as the Supra remains an integral part of Toyota’s GR performance lineup, which also includes the GR Yaris.

The Supra nameplate carries significant legacy, dating back decades, and Toyota considers it an essential part of its sports car identity. Hanley highlighted that the Supra’s association with motorsports would further enhance Toyota’s image as a performance-oriented brand. He also mentioned that racing the Supra would help attract more attention to Toyota, making it a brand that consumers see as exciting and successful.

Interestingly, Hanley alluded to possible future changes for the Toyota Supra, stating that it might morph in terms of shape. This could hint at a potential shift in design or the addition of new body styles, possibly extending the Supra beyond its current two-door coupe form. Despite the uncertainties surrounding the Z4, Hanley remained firm in his belief that the Supra’s future is secure.

While Hanley was confident about the Supra’s ongoing presence in Toyota’s lineup, he expressed less optimism about the future of the latest Prius hybrid in Australia. He acknowledged that the new Prius was a visually appealing vehicle but noted that Toyota had chosen to focus more on SUVs like the C-HR. He explained that the Prius might struggle to achieve the necessary sales volume due to pricing challenges, which is why it would not be a priority for the Australian market. Instead, Toyota’s product portfolio would continue to emphasize models better suited to local demand, such as SUVs and other high-performing vehicles like the Toyota Crown.
