In a move that turned heads across the automotive world, Toyota — the company that practically wrote the book on hybrid technology — made a bold statement about mild hybrids. The Japanese giant made it clear that these systems don’t qualify as true hybrids and don’t deliver the genuine electric driving experience that has defined Toyota’s lineup for decades.
The clarification came from Sean Hanley, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota Australia, whose remarks quickly sparked debate across the media. He explained that mild hybrid vehicles shouldn’t be viewed as hybrids in the traditional sense — a direct response to the growing number of automakers promoting this technology as a full hybrid alternative.
Full Hybrid vs. Mild Hybrid — What’s the Real Difference?
To understand Toyota’s stance, it helps to look at how each system actually works. Full hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, are equipped with a powerful electric motor and a large battery that can power the car on electricity alone for short distances. In certain driving conditions — especially at low speeds or in city traffic — the car can move without using the gasoline engine at all, significantly cutting fuel consumption and emissions.
Mild hybrids, however, play a very different role. They use a small 48-volt system designed to assist the engine during acceleration or while restarting the car at stoplights. They can never move on electric power alone. In simple terms, a mild hybrid helps the engine, while a full hybrid can occasionally replace it — at least for short stretches.
Toyota Makes Its Position Clear
Hanley explained that cars powered by 48-volt systems don’t meet Toyota’s definition of a hybrid. He pointed out that some manufacturers use the word “hybrid” loosely for marketing purposes, which could mislead buyers into thinking they’re getting a full hybrid experience. He stressed that customers deserve clarity and honesty about the technology they’re investing in.
Coming from Toyota — the company that introduced the first mass-produced hybrid, the Prius — this statement carries significant weight. It’s a reminder that even as the industry races toward electrification, words matter, and not every “electrified” system qualifies as a true hybrid.

Interestingly, Toyota itself now sells models like the Prado 48V and Hilux 48V, which use mild hybrid systems in certain markets. But Toyota is careful not to market them as full hybrids.
These vehicles use a small electric motor and compact battery to assist the gasoline engine, making acceleration smoother and improving efficiency slightly. Yet they can’t drive on electric power alone — so Toyota classifies them as “electrified” rather than “hybrid.” The system’s goal is refinement and fuel economy, not full electric capability.
Why the Difference Matters
For Toyota, the distinction between mild and full hybrids is about more than marketing — it’s about credibility. Since the launch of the original Prius back in 1997, Toyota has built its reputation on true hybrid technology. From its perspective, a real hybrid must have a relatively large battery, the ability to move independently using electric power, a regenerative braking system that recovers energy, and fuel economy that clearly outperforms regular combustion engines.
Mild hybrid systems simply don’t tick all those boxes. They offer efficiency gains, but not the transformational benefits that made hybrid cars famous.
Defending the Legacy of the Hybrid Pioneer
With this statement, Toyota reminded the industry who started the hybrid revolution. While many brands rush to label anything with a small electric assist as a “hybrid,” Toyota insists on keeping the term meaningful.
