While the company has not yet released its full-year sales figures, it already has plenty to celebrate. By November 2024, Toyota sold an impressive 9,857,938 new vehicles globally. This total includes contributions from its subsidiaries Lexus, Daihatsu, and Hino, underscoring the strength of its diverse portfolio

In comparison, the Volkswagen Group reported its complete 2024 sales, which totaled 9,239,500 vehicles—a 2.3% drop from the previous year. Despite its extensive lineup and a greater variety of hybrid and electric vehicles, Volkswagen has once again fallen short of overtaking Toyota as the top automaker for 2024.

Toyota’s dominance stems from its vast range of internal combustion engine vehicles, which continue to resonate with consumers worldwide. Whether it’s compact cars in Japan or full-size SUVs in the United States, Toyota’s extensive lineup covers virtually every segment. From sedans and wagons to trucks, minivans, and even performance cars like the Toyota GR86 and Toyota GR Supra, the company’s offerings ensure it maintains its global appeal.

Although Toyota’s progress in the electric vehicle market has been slow, its reliance on internal combustion technology has proven highly effective in maintaining its market leadership. Volkswagen, despite its focus on electrification and hybrid technology, has been unable to close the gap.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, is expected to secure third place globally, with 7.23 million vehicles sold in 2024. This marks a slight 1% decline compared to the previous year but solidifies the group’s position among the industry’s leaders.

As the top automaker for 2024, Toyota’s unmatched market strategy and diverse offerings have once again solidified its dominance in the global automotive market.
