Most hybrid cars on the market today come with automatic transmissions or continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) that provide smooth and efficient power delivery but it seems that Toyota is taking a different approach.

According to a recently discovered patent, Toyota is reportedly developing a manual transmission for its performance hybrid vehicles, which would add an extra level of driver engagement and control to the already impressive lineup.

Toyota filed a patent application in August 2021 for a system that would allow manual transmission in hybrid vehicles, managing the interplay between the internal combustion engine, electric motor, and transmission, with the main focus being on the clutch. The patent was recently published in February and was first noticed by The Drive.

This system features a shuttle valve with several clutch cylinders that connect to both the clutch pedal and the engine control unit (ECU), allowing the driver to shift gears as they would with a traditional manual transmission. The ECU would control the clutch and facilitate the smooth transition between the gas-powered engine and electric motor. It would also activate the clutch when the car is coasting to a stop or starting off to allow the electric motor to take over when appropriate.

The proposed system comprises of multiple clutch cylinders connected to a shuttle valve, which is in turn linked to both the clutch pedal and the ECU. This feature enables the driver to enjoy the gear selection process, almost like the traditional manual transmission, but with a better and smoother performance. Moreover, the system also has an option for a driving mode in which the computer would not interfere with the gear shifting process and leave it solely to the clutch pedal. This means that drivers can experience the thrill of controlling their car’s gears while enjoying the benefits of a hybrid car.

Additionally, the patent also includes an intelligent clutch system that allows the car to shift seamlessly between engine and electric power, making the driving experience more efficient and comfortable.
