The Unveiling of Red Bull Car RB17 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
After years of anticipation, Red Bull has officially revealed its inaugural customer track car, the Red Bull Car RB17, at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. This two-seater, mid-engine hypercar is set to make waves with its impressive performance specs, boasting over 1,200 horsepower from an electrically assisted 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V-10 engine capable of reaching an astonishing 15,000 rpm. Weighing in at under 1,984 pounds, the RB17 promises track performance on par with Formula 1 cars.

Engine and Performance

The exceptional weight of the Red Bull Car RB17 is achieved through a carbon fiber two-seater monocoque design, utilizing the engine as a stressed member of the chassis. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox and a hydraulically locking active limited-slip differential. Notably, there is no reverse gear; backing up is managed by an electric motor integrated into the drivetrain.

The electric motor contributes 200 horsepower, with the V-10 engine providing the remaining 1,000 hp. This combination ensures immense power, with standard traction control and anti-lock brakes to maintain stability during heavy braking. The Red Bull Car RB17 can achieve a top speed of over 217 mph.

Aerodynamics and Handling

Developed under the guidance of Red Bull engineering mastermind Adrian Newey, the Red Bull Car RB17 features advanced aerodynamics. The car generates up to 3,747 pounds of downforce, nearly double its own weight, thanks to sophisticated design elements such as wheel wake management systems and active front and rear wings that adjust downforce based on driving conditions.

The RB17’s suspension system is equally impressive, featuring adjustable pushrod suspension with active height and roll control, and a lift mode for navigating low-speed bumps. The car also includes hydraulically assisted power steering and carbon brakes on all four corners, with the rear brakes utilizing a brake-by-wire system.

Encasing the brakes are 18-inch carbon fiber wheels fitted with Michelin racing slicks designed specifically for the Red Bull Car RB17. Customers can opt for a 20-inch wheel option with high-performance treaded tires, enhancing the car’s versatility on different track surfaces.

Interior and Usability

Red Bull designed the Red Bull Car RB17 to be both exhilarating and practical for frequent use. The interior features custom seat options, an adjustable pedal box, and built-in storage for race suits and helmets. The engine runs on pump gas, and each car comes with a 2-year/4,000-kilometer warranty. Red Bull claims the RB17 is durable enough for a 24-hour race without servicing, with routine maintenance available at Red Bull’s HQ, local service centers, or the customer’s location. Major services are required every 8,000 kilometers (about 5,000 miles) and must be conducted at the company’s headquarters.

Exclusive Ownership Experience

Similar to other elite track-only supercar manufacturers like Ferrari and McLaren, Red Bull plans to host exclusive events for Red Bull Car RB17 owners to use their cars on the track. Owners will also gain access to Red Bull Racing celebrations, simulator sessions, and off-track social events, fostering a close-knit community of enthusiasts.

Adrian Newey’s Vision

Adrian Newey, the genius behind the Red Bull Car RB17, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I had been mulling around the idea to take on the challenge to design our very own hypercar, from concept to delivery, for many years and it has been a magnificent project and journey. For it to finally be the day we pull the covers off and see the birth of the RB17 is truly remarkable. The RB17 hypercar embraces everything we stand for: undeniable power, speed, and beauty. It is very adaptable in its abilities, and we made sure to design it as a two-seater so that the thrill of driving at F1 speeds can be enjoyed with a friend or partner.
