The New Pajero Could Finally Make Driver Assistance Less Annoying

Modern driver assistance systems are supposed to make driving safer, but anyone who spends time behind the wheel of a new car knows they can sometimes do the opposite of making life easier. Constant warning chimes, overly sensitive lane alerts, and unexpected steering or braking interventions can quickly turn helpful technology into an everyday annoyance.

Mitsubishi seems well aware of the problem, and the company is taking a different approach with the all new Pajero, which is expected to arrive in global markets around the beginning of 2027.

Rather than simply adding more safety technology, Mitsubishi wants the new Pajero to be smarter about when and how that technology steps in.

Mitsubishi Wants the New Pajero to Know When to Intervene

Much of what Mitsubishi learned came from customer feedback surrounding the L200 pickup, which shares some of its platform architecture with the upcoming Pajero.

Mitsubishi officials acknowledged criticism of the L200’s driver assistance systems, particularly when it came to intrusive warnings and unnecessary interventions. That feedback has now influenced how the company is tuning the systems for the new Pajero.

According to Mitsubishi Chief Vehicle Engineer Takaki Matsumoto, the hardware itself isn’t the problem. The Pajero will continue using the company’s advanced sensors, but Mitsubishi has changed the logic behind them, including the criteria used to determine when the vehicle should warn the driver.

Engineers have also worked on the alerts themselves. Their sound, tone, and timing have been adjusted to make them less intrusive during normal driving, while still getting the driver’s attention when intervention is genuinely necessary.

The Pajero will still come loaded with safety technology. Its equipment is expected to include Forward Collision Mitigation, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Emergency Lane Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Mitsubishi’s MI-PILOT highway assistance system.

Eight airbags will also be included, with a center airbag positioned between the front seats appearing in the Pajero for the first time.

When Will the New Pajero Arrive?

Mitsubishi is expected to begin rolling out the 2027 Pajero in global markets from late 2026 into early 2027. Thailand and Australia are expected to be among the first markets to receive the SUV following its official debut.

Mitsubishi is also studying a hybrid powertrain for the new generation, something that could eventually help bring the Pajero back to the US market, potentially wearing the familiar Montero name once again.

ArabGT’s Take

Mitsubishi’s approach makes a lot of sense. The best safety system isn’t necessarily the one that intervenes the most. It’s the one that knows when intervention is actually needed.

Drivers shouldn’t have to fight their own car or listen to constant warnings during normal everyday driving. If Mitsubishi can make the new Pajero’s assistance systems feel less intrusive without compromising safety, it could become one of those improvements owners appreciate every single time they get behind the wheel.

And in a segment where ruggedness, comfort, and everyday usability matter just as much as technology, that could give the new Pajero a meaningful advantage over its rivals.
