BYD PHEV, a pioneer in plug-in hybrid technology, has launched its fifth-generation dual-motor hybrid system, boasting an impressive 1,300-mile range (2,100 km) on a single tank. This breakthrough will be available initially in two models for the Chinese market: the Qin L DM-i and the Haibao 06 DM-i (Haibao translates to “seal”).

Advanced Engine and Battery Technology

The new BYD PHEV setup retains the 1.5-liter engine, paired with either a 10.08 kWh battery (providing 37 miles of pure electric range) or a 15.87 kWh battery (offering nearly 56 miles of electric-only travel). The significant gains in range are attributed to higher density batteries and enhanced efficiency. For example, the thermal efficiency of the engine has been increased to 46.06%, up from 43.04% in the previous generation, leading to reduced fuel consumption and extended range.

Fuel Efficiency and Range Enhancements

Fuel consumption for the new BYD PHEV setup stands at just 2.9 liters per 62 miles (100 km), down from 3.8 liters per 100 km. This improved efficiency nearly doubles the cruising range from 745 miles (1,200 km) to 1,300 miles (2,100 km). The new models also feature improved heat management, contributing to these gains.

Electric Range and Charging Capabilities

In addition to the extensive fuel-powered range, these BYD PHEV models offer significant electric-only capabilities. Vehicles equipped with the 10.08 kWh battery can travel up to 50 miles (80 km) on electric power, while those with the 15.78 kWh battery can achieve up to 74 miles (120 km) of electric range. Charging has also been upgraded, with AC charging increased from 3.3 kW to 6.6 kW, and on a DC charger, the battery can charge from 30-80% in just 21 minutes.

Engine Performance and Specifications

The core of the new BYD PHEV system is the ultra-efficient 1.5-liter petrol engine, which BYD claims to have the highest thermal efficiency of any production car at 46.06%. This engine includes advanced technologies such as intelligent combustion, variable lubrication, and split cooling systems. Depending on the model, the engine can be paired with either a 161 hp (120 kW) electric motor or a 215 hp (160 kW) motor, delivering a seamless blend of power and efficiency.

Affordable Pricing

Despite the advanced technology and impressive performance, the new BYD PHEV models Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i are priced competitively. Starting prices are set at 99,800 yuan (approximately $13,750), making these innovative vehicles accessible to a wide range of consumers. The top-tier models are priced at 139,800 yuan (around $19,300).

BYD PHEV’s Legacy and Future Prospects

BYD’s innovation in hybrid technology is not new. The company was the first to mass-produce a plug-in hybrid with the F3DM PHEV-60 in 2008, years before competitors like Toyota entered the market. This extensive experience positions BYD as a leader in hybrid technology.

Though currently available only in China, there is potential for these BYD PHEV models to be introduced to other markets, including Europe. If they do, they are likely to attract significant attention due to their impressive range and advanced features.

In summary, BYD PHEV’s new plug-in hybrid models not only set a new benchmark for range and efficiency but also offer a glim
