Mercedes-Benz is preparing for a major turning point as January 2026 approaches. Gordon Wagener, the man behind the look and feel of modern Mercedes cars, is set to leave his role after 28 years of shaping the brand’s visual identity. His departure doesn’t just mark the end of a job title, but the closing of a chapter that defined an entire design era for the three-pointed star.
From the SLR McLaren, a Career Took Shape
Wagener joined Mercedes-Benz back in 1997, and his first major step was anything but ordinary. He was involved in the design of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, working alongside Gordon Murray, the iconic engineer behind the McLaren F1.
When the SLR McLaren entered production in 2003 with its supercharged 5.4-liter V8, it wasn’t just a halo car — it was the foundation of a design journey that would influence Mercedes for decades.
Climbing Quickly to the Top
By 2008, Wagener had risen to Head of Design, overseeing some of the most important models in the brand’s modern history. Under his leadership, cars like the S-Class W222, the first-generation AMG GT, and the A-Class W176 came to life, each playing a key role in redefining Mercedes for a new generation.
In 2016, following a major internal restructuring, he became the first person to hold the title of Chief Design Officer at Mercedes-Benz — a role that reflected just how central design had become to the brand’s strategy.
A Decade of Bold Design and Honest Debate
Over the past ten years, Wagener led Mercedes-Benz through one of its most daring design phases. From the return of the SL with the R232, to modernizing the G-Class without losing its soul, and launching the EQ family of electric vehicles, his influence was everywhere.
Not all of these designs were universally loved, especially within the electric lineup, but Wagener never aimed to please everyone. He consistently argued that great design must be bold, even if it divides opinion — a philosophy that defined his time at the brand.
Vision Iconic as a Final Statement
Among his final projects are the new Mercedes CLA, the electric GLC, and the striking Mercedes-AMG Vision Iconic concept.
The Vision Iconic, in particular, feels like a farewell message. With its oversized grille and dramatic presence, it sends a clear signal that Mercedes-Benz is still willing to challenge conventions and push design boundaries rather than play it safe.
Never Afraid to Speak His Mind
Wagener was also known for his blunt honesty. He recently criticized the interior design of Audi’s Concept C, saying it felt like something from 1995, and questioned BMW’s wide screen layout in the iX3, which stretches beneath the windshield.
At the same time, he strongly defended Mercedes-Benz’s Hyperscreen setup — a massive 39.1-inch display spanning the entire dashboard — seeing it as a bold and defining element of the brand’s future.
