BMW is about to turn a familiar name into something entirely new. The i3, once known as a quirky compact electric city car, is making a comeback — but this time with far bigger ambitions.
The German automaker has confirmed that March 18 will be the official global reveal of the 2027 BMW i3, an all-electric sports sedan built as part of BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse family. In other words, this isn’t a revival of the old i3 — it’s the beginning of a completely new chapter.
What makes the story even more interesting is that BMW isn’t abandoning combustion engines just yet. Alongside the electric i3, the company plans to introduce the next generation of the 3 Series with gasoline and diesel engines later this year, meaning both powertrains will continue to exist side by side for the foreseeable future.
A Fresh Design Language
Early teaser images suggest the new i3 will look very different from current BMW models. The controversial oversized vertical kidney grille appears to be gone, replaced by wider, more horizontal kidney elements that blend into the headlights — a styling cue inspired by BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse concept.
Inside, the cabin will reflect BMW’s new digital philosophy. Expect a clean, minimalist dashboard with very few physical buttons, centered around a large 17.9-inch display and an advanced projection system that stretches information across the entire windshield.
Good News For Enthusiasts
BMW knows many drivers still value traditional engines. That’s why the next-generation gasoline and diesel 3 Series is also on the way.
The company has confirmed that six-cylinder engines will continue to power the M3, and rumors suggest a future M350 variant with a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine. Meanwhile, the electric i3 will ride on BMW’s dedicated Neue Klasse EV platform, while combustion models will evolve from the proven CLAR architecture.
A Balanced Future
BMW’s strategy seems clear: instead of rushing toward a fully electric lineup, the brand is choosing a balanced transition. Electric and gasoline-powered 3 Series models will likely share a similar design and coexist in the market well into the next decade, giving customers the freedom to choose what suits them best.
If BMW gets the formula right, the new i3 could become one of the brand’s most important cars — taking on rivals like the Tesla Model 3 while preserving the driving character BMW fans expect.
