Tesla appears to be preparing a bigger and more practical version of the Model Y for the U.S. market, and this one could matter a lot for families.
The upcoming Model Y L is a long-wheelbase version of Tesla’s best-selling SUV, offering more cabin space and a more usable third row. It is already sold in markets such as China, Australia, and India, and reports now suggest that Tesla plans to bring it to America.
The timing is important. Tesla recently ended production of the Model X after 11 years, leaving a clear gap in its lineup for buyers who need a proper three-row electric SUV. Yes, the regular Model Y can be ordered with seven seats, but anyone who has seen that third row knows it is not exactly generous.
That is where the Model Y L comes in.
The stretched SUV is around seven inches longer than the standard Model Y and nearly two inches taller, giving passengers more breathing room. Instead of trying to squeeze in seven seats, Tesla uses a six-seat layout with three rows of two. The second row gets captain’s chairs, which should make the cabin feel more open and easier to use.
Tesla has not confirmed the U.S. specifications yet, but the Model Y L is expected to launch with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. A rear-wheel-drive version could arrive later, although a Performance model seems less certain.
Production for the American market is expected to take place at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas, with sales likely to begin before the end of 2026.
For Tesla, this is more than just a longer Model Y. It could become the company’s new family-focused SUV, filling the role once held by the Model X while staying close to the formula that made the Model Y such a massive success.
The regular Model Y is already America’s best-selling electric vehicle, and a roomier version could make it even harder for rivals to catch up.
