For years, much of the automotive industry mocked Elon Musk and Tesla’s stubborn approach to self-driving technology. But now, the tables appear to be turning. In a major shift, German giants BMW and Mercedes are quietly stepping back from some of their most ambitious Level 3 autonomous driving plans, indirectly proving that Tesla’s vision may have been the more realistic one all along.
While German automakers invested billions into expensive LiDAR sensors, Tesla insisted on relying mainly on cameras. Today, BMW and Mercedes are facing a difficult reality: the technology they bet on is extremely costly, demand is limited, and global infrastructure is still far from ready.
The Level 3 Problem Why Are German Brands Pulling Back
Autonomous driving systems are ranked from Level 0 to Level 5, with Level 3 representing the point where drivers can theoretically take their hands off the wheel and shift their attention elsewhere. However, reaching that stage comes with major challenges.
According to a study by McKinsey, the cost of developing and testing Level 3 systems can be four to seven times higher than less advanced driver assistance systems.
In the BMW 7 Series, adding Level 3 technology reportedly increased the price by around $7,000, making it a difficult sell even in the luxury sedan segment.
BMW has also reportedly confirmed that its updated 2027 7 Series will not include Level 3 autonomous functions, mainly because of the high costs involved and the complexity of validating the system’s safety.
Was Elon Musk Brilliant Or Just Lucky
For years, Tesla faced criticism for choosing a camera-based vision system instead of LiDAR. Critics argued that cameras struggle in poor weather conditions like fog and heavy rain, while LiDAR can provide a much more detailed view of the surroundings.
However, Tesla chose not to rush into Level 3 autonomy. Instead, it focused on improving Level 2+ systems that still require driver attention. That approach allowed the company to save billions in development costs while making its technology easier to scale and more commercially viable.
The Roads Are Not Ready And Full Autonomy Is Still Far Away
The challenge is not only about the cars themselves, but also about the world around them. Mercedes’ Drive Pilot system, for example, came with strict limitations.
It only worked in clear weather conditions.
It required another car in front to follow.
It only operated on specific highways that had been mapped in extreme detail.
With road markings varying from country to country and regulations still fragmented around the world, experts now believe true Level 4 self-driving cars will not become mainstream before 2035 or even 2040. Even then, they are expected to be limited to highly controlled urban environments.
Who Is Still Pushing Forward
Despite German brands pulling back, General Motors is still moving ahead with its own plans. The company is currently testing advanced systems in a fleet of around 200 vehicles and is aiming to bring Level 3 autonomous technology to the Cadillac Escalade IQ by 2028.

What we are seeing now is a major reset for the automotive industry. Mercedes and BMW have realized that technological bragging rights do not automatically translate into commercial success.
Tesla, despite all the criticism it received, chose a more gradual and cost-conscious path. Ironically, that is now the same direction many of the industry’s biggest names seem to be following.
