Tesla Sales in 2024 Overtake Audi for the First Time

Tesla achieved a groundbreaking milestone in 2024 by surpassing Audi in global car sales, marking the first time the Texas-based electric vehicle manufacturer outperformed one of the German luxury car giants. Tesla sales in 2024 showcased the growing dominance of electric vehicles in the automotive market and solidified the company’s position as a formidable competitor among traditional luxury brands.

Under the leadership of Elon Musk, Tesla delivered an impressive 1,789,226 vehicles globally in 2024. This achievement placed the company ahead of Audi by 118,008 units, a significant lead for a brand with a streamlined lineup. In comparison, Audi, a key part of the Volkswagen Group, faced an 11.8% decline in sales, delivering 1,671,218 cars worldwide during the same period.

2024 Global Automotive Sales Overview
• BMW dominated the luxury segment, selling 2,200,177 vehicles worldwide.
• Mercedes-Benz followed with 1,983,400 vehicles, 216,777 fewer than BMW.
• Tesla sales in 2024 reached 1,789,226 units globally, securing third place overall.
• Audi ranked fourth with 1,671,218 cars sold, trailing Tesla by a notable margin.

Tesla’s performance is even more remarkable considering its comparatively small lineup of just five electric models: the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. The Model 3 and Model Y dominated Tesla’s sales figures, collectively accounting for a staggering 1,704,093 vehicles sold, highlighting their popularity across global markets. The remaining 85,133 units came from the premium Model S, Model X, and the recently launched Cybertruck.

In contrast, Audi offers a diverse and expansive portfolio that includes numerous luxury models such as the A1 Sportback, A3 Sportback and Sedan, A5 Sedan and Avant, A6 Sedan and Avant, A7 Sportback, A8, Q2, Q3 Sportback, Q5 Sportback, Q7, and Q8. Additionally, the brand provides high-performance S and RS variants for many of its models. Audi has also made strides in the electric vehicle sector with offerings like the Q4 E-Tron, A6 Sportback E-Tron, Q6 E-Tron, and the E-Tron GT. Moreover, the company caters to regional markets like China with exclusive long-wheelbase sedans and SUVs, reflecting its global approach to luxury and innovation.

Despite the introduction of Tesla’s updated 2025 Model Y, industry analysts believe Tesla sales in 2024, while impressive, may not yet pose a significant threat to the global sales dominance of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. However, Tesla’s consistent growth signals the increasing acceptance of electric vehicles as a mainstream choice, particularly in the premium segment.

Audi, aiming to regain momentum, is banking on a new initiative in China. Collaborating with SAIC, the brand plans to launch a separate lineup under a fresh name, distancing itself from its iconic four-ring logo. Scheduled to debut in mid-2025, this venture will introduce three production models specifically tailored for the Chinese market. Whether this strategy will help Audi close the gap with Tesla remains uncertain, but it highlights the competitive pressures reshaping the automotive industry.
