When Will BYD Introduce Solid-State Batteries in Its Vehicles?

While the transition to solid-state batteries has taken longer than anticipated, more automakers are pushing forward with their development for next-generation electric vehicles. Among them is BYD, a leading Chinese brand, which plans to introduce these batteries in 2027, with broader adoption expected from 2030 onward.

This past weekend, the China Solid-State Battery Innovation and Development Summit Forum provided new insights into BYD’s progress. Sun Huajun, the company’s Lithium Battery Technology Chief Technology Officer, shared that these advanced batteries—utilizing sulfide electrolytes—are approaching production readiness. While he did not specify the targeted energy density, BYD had already commenced trial production last year, testing battery capacities of 20Ah and 60Ah.

As BYD continues refining this cutting-edge battery technology, the rollout for its mid-range and premium EVs is projected to begin in 2027. Once production costs decline, these next-generation batteries could become available in more budget-friendly BYD models between 2030 and 2032, according to CarNewsChina. The company ultimately aims to price solid-state batteries competitively with current lithium-ion solutions.

Despite this progress, traditional battery technologies are far from obsolete. BYD’s Chief Scientist and Automotive Engineer, Lian Yubo, emphasized that lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will remain a vital component of affordable EVs for the next 15 to 20 years.

China’s Automakers Racing Toward Solid-State Battery Adoption

Beyond BYD, several other Chinese manufacturers are advancing their own solid-state battery technologies. Chery, for example, announced last October that it had developed prototype batteries with an energy density of 400 Wh/kg and is aiming to increase this to 500 Wh/kg. The company expects to install these high-capacity batteries in vehicles starting in 2026, with mass production scheduled for the following year. Chery claims these batteries could provide electric vehicles with an astonishing range of up to 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) on a single charge—a milestone that could transform the EV landscape.

Global Automakers Join the Race

The race to develop solid-state batteries isn’t limited to Chinese companies. Major international automakers, including Toyota and Nissan, have made substantial investments in this technology and are preparing to introduce their own solid-state-powered EVs in the coming years, God willing.
