Porsche plans to introduce the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) in 2024, alongside the release of the next-generation, all-electric Macan. Originally scheduled for this year, the debut of the emission-free crossover was delayed due to software challenges. Regarding the existing internal combustion engine (ICE) model, Porsche has confirmed that it will remain available for a few more years alongside its electric vehicle (EV) counterpart.

According to a recent report by Automotive News Europe, Porsche is considering extending the lifespan of the gasoline-powered Macan. Initially, the plan was to discontinue the internal combustion engine (ICE) version in the United States by 2025 or 2026. However, recent developments suggest a change in strategy. Porsche now intends to assess the sales performance of the electric vehicle (EV) variant, taking into account customer feedback that indicates insufficient charging infrastructure in the US. This shift in plans aims to ensure a thorough evaluation before making any decisions regarding the future of the ICE Macan.

Porsche must exercise great caution in determining the future of the Macan, given its significant sales success. In 2022, the model ranked as the brand’s second best-selling vehicle, with a remarkable delivery figure of 86,724 units. During a meeting with dealers held in the Canary Islands, Porsche acknowledged the need to carefully review the fate of the gasoline version. This decision comes in response to “customer pushback” concerning the inadequate charging infrastructure, which is anticipated to have a detrimental effect on the sales of the electric vehicle variant.

At the meeting, dealers were presented with an opportunity to preview the electric Macan and an updated Taycan, set to be released in the upcoming year. The impressive Mission X concept was also showcased, although Porsche did not disclose any plans for a production version at that time. Nevertheless, it would not be unexpected if the electric hypercar eventually emerges as a successor to the iconic 918 Spyder in the coming years.

In addition to the Macan EV, Porsche is actively developing two more electric SUVs as part of their future lineup. The next-generation Cayenne will follow suit by shedding its internal combustion engines, while a high-end three-row model is also in the works. Alongside these SUVs, the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman models are expected to be phased out around 2025 to pave the way for the introduction of electric sports cars.

While Porsche has ambitious plans to electrify its lineup, the iconic 911 will remain an exception for now. However, in the near future, the renowned sports car is expected to receive a hybrid variant. According to rumors, the GT2 RS model is likely to undergo partial electrification, with the aim of delivering an impressive power output exceeding 700 horsepower.
