Nearly 176,000 Swaps In Just One Day

On February 21 alone, Nio owners completed 175,976 battery swaps across China — in a single day. That translates to one swap every half second.
The timing makes the achievement even more impressive. The record was set during the second day of the Lunar New Year, one of the busiest travel periods in China. Highways were packed, cities were alive, and while millions were on the move, Nio’s stations worked with quiet precision, keeping cars rolling without delay.
This is no longer an experiment. It is a functioning ecosystem.
A Network Built At Scale
Nio now operates more than 8,600 charging and battery-swapping stations across China, covering over 550 cities and linking 16 major urban hubs through critical highway corridors.
And the ambition does not stop at home. The company has already begun expanding its swapping infrastructure into Europe, signaling that this is not just a domestic strategy — it is a global vision.
Faster Than Filling A Fuel Tank
The fourth-generation swapping stations, introduced in mid-2024, represent a serious technological leap.
Early stations stored just four or five battery packs. Today’s facilities can hold up to 23 batteries and handle as many as 480 swaps per day per station.
But the real headline is time. A full battery replacement takes just 2 minutes and 24 seconds. In practical terms, that is often quicker than pulling into a petrol station, waiting your turn, and refueling a gasoline car.
For EV drivers, that changes everything.
A Strategic Move That Could Shift The Industry
Perhaps the most strategic step Nio has taken is opening its technology to other major Chinese manufacturers, including Geely, Chery, FAW, GAC, and Changan.
This is not just collaboration — it is ecosystem building. By allowing other brands to access its swapping network, Nio dramatically increases scale, convenience, and long-term viability. It also places significant pressure on global competitors that still rely exclusively on traditional plug-in charging.
