New Rivian R2 Variants Are On The Way

Rivian is preparing to make its upcoming R2 platform much bigger than a single electric SUV. According to CEO RJ Scaringe, the company is already working on additional R2 variants that have not yet been revealed, signaling that Rivian’s more affordable model family could become the foundation of its next major growth phase.

The R2 is positioned as a smaller and more accessible alternative to Rivian’s current premium models, the R1T electric pickup and R1S electric SUV. While those vehicles helped establish Rivian’s image as an adventure-focused EV brand, their higher prices kept them in a more limited segment of the market. The R2 is designed to push Rivian closer to mainstream buyers.

Scaringe did not confirm what the new R2 variants will be, but his comments leave the door open for several possibilities, including a pickup version or a more performance-focused model such as a potential R2X. He also said Rivian’s planned Georgia plant will allow the company to build different variations of the R2 platform.

This makes the R2 more than just another new vehicle. It could become a full product family, sitting below the R1 range and alongside future models like the compact R3 crossover and the sportier R3X.

The timing is important. Demand for electric vehicles has faced pressure from higher borrowing costs and changes to tax incentives, making lower-priced EVs increasingly important. Rivian is counting on the R2 to broaden its customer base, increase deliveries, and compete in a more affordable part of the EV market.

Rivian’s ambitions also extend beyond private buyers. The R2 is expected to play a key role in Uber’s future robotaxi plans, with thousands of autonomous R2 vehicles set to be deployed from 2028.

For Rivian, the message is clear: the R2 is not just a cheaper SUV. It is the platform that could define the company’s next chapter.
