As the fiscal year concludes, Japanese automakers reveal their performance and make significant announcements. This year, Mazda confirmed the next-generation CX-5 hybrid, and Subaru has its own exciting news: the production of the new Forester is moving to the United States.

The sixth-generation new Forester will be assembled in Indiana at the Lafayette factory. With the Legacy sedan ending production after the 2025 model year, there will be ample capacity to accommodate this shift. Subaru plans to produce a hybrid version of the new Forester at the same location starting in 2026. Additionally, the new Forester will continue to be produced domestically at Subaru’s Ōta factory in Japan’s Gunma Prefecture.

The electrified new Forester will incorporate Toyota’s hybrid technology, yet it will remain a “Subaru distinctive HEV [hybrid-electric vehicle]” featuring the brand’s signature horizontally opposed engine. This isn’t Subaru’s first hybrid collaboration with Toyota, as the Crosstrek plug-in hybrid utilized Prius Prime technology back in 2019.

Subaru is set to introduce this next-generation hybrid system to the Crosstrek by 2026. The Crosstrek is already being manufactured in both the United States and Japan, ensuring its widespread availability.

According to media reports, Subaru also intends to launch three new electric SUVs with Toyota’s assistance. These new models, announced in an investor document, will join the Solterra, which shares its platform with the Toyota bZ4X. One of these new electric SUVs will be built by Toyota in the US, while another will be manufactured by Subaru at its Yajima plant in Japan.

All three electric SUVs are expected to be available by the end of 2026. Subaru also has plans to release additional electric vehicles developed in-house by 2028, further expanding their electric vehicle lineup and solidifying their commitment to innovative and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

With these developments, Subaru is poised to enhance its market presence and offer a broader range of eco-friendly vehicles to meet the growing demand for sustainable transportation.
