New EV Batteries Designed for Winter and Summer Use

For a long time, batteries have been the biggest question mark in the electric car story. Cold weather drains range faster than expected, while extreme heat—especially in Gulf climates—raises concerns about long-term durability and fast-charging wear. But recent progress suggests those worries may finally be easing.

Over the past year, CATL has been pushing battery development in two very different directions at once. One focuses on keeping electric cars reliable in freezing temperatures, while the other aims to make batteries last longer—even under intense heat and frequent fast charging.

Sodium-Ion Batteries Built for the Cold

In places where winter temperatures regularly drop below zero, such as Northern Europe and Canada, traditional lithium batteries struggle. Range falls, charging slows, and overall performance suffers. This is where sodium-ion batteries begin to make sense.

CATL says its latest sodium-ion battery can keep up to 90% of its capacity at –40°C, and continue operating down to –50°C without major performance loss. Compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, that’s a significant improvement in real-world winter usability.

More importantly, this isn’t just lab theory. CATL has already tested the technology in passenger cars with Changan in northern Mongolia, one of the harshest environments imaginable. The first production car using this battery has now reached the road, offering a driving range of more than 400 kilometers on a single charge.

A Battery Designed to Survive Extreme Heat

At the other extreme, hot climates pose a different challenge. High temperatures and fast charging are known to accelerate battery degradation, which is why many EV owners in warm regions worry about long-term ownership.

CATL’s answer is a new 5C lithium-ion battery designed to handle both. Under moderate conditions, the company says the battery can retain 80% of its capacity after 3,000 fast-charging cycles, equivalent to roughly 1.8 million kilometers of driving. Even in temperatures as high as 60°C—similar to peak summer conditions in the Gulf—the battery reportedly keeps 80% of its capacity after 1,400 cycles, or about 840,000 kilometers.

That’s more distance than most cars will ever travel in their lifetime.

Charging in 12 Minutes — Without Killing the Battery

Fast charging has always been a double-edged sword. It’s convenient, but it usually comes at the cost of battery health. CATL claims its 5C technology changes that equation.

The battery can charge from 0 to 100% in around 12 minutes, yet it’s engineered to avoid the usual damage associated with ultra-fast charging. The company points to several design solutions, including improved cathode coatings, special electrolyte additives that help heal microscopic damage, and a smart thermal management system that targets hot spots before they become a problem.

Is EV Anxiety Finally Starting to Fade?

When you look at the bigger picture—batteries that work reliably in extreme cold, others that shrug off extreme heat, and lifespans measured in hundreds of thousands or even millions of kilometers—it’s clear the conversation is changing.

Concerns about battery degradation, winter range loss, or buying a used electric car with an unknown charging history no longer feel as heavy as they once did. If batteries can realistically outlast the vehicles they power and perform well in the harshest climates, electric cars start to look less like a compromise—and more like a complete solution.
