A New BYD Pickup Truck Set to Take on the Ford F-150

A New BYD Pickup Truck Set to Take on the Ford F-150

BYD is preparing to launch a new BYD pickup truck, designed to be even larger than the Shark 6, which has earned positive reviews. Rather than going fully electric, the automaker is expected to equip this model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. However, despite its bold entry into the full-size truck segment, this vehicle is unlikely to be available in the U.S. market.

BYD Expands Its Pickup Lineup

The Chinese automotive powerhouse, recognized for its advancements in electric and hybrid technology, is set to introduce a full-size BYD pickup truck aimed at competing with established models like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Toyota Tundra. This new addition will be significantly larger than the BYD Shark 6, which currently targets midsize pickups such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Australia is expected to be one of the key markets for this new BYD pickup truck, with production likely to include right-hand-drive models directly from the factory. This could provide a pricing advantage over competitors that require aftermarket right-hand-drive conversions, which often increase costs for buyers in Australia and other right-hand-drive markets.

Although BYD has not yet disclosed full technical specifications, the upcoming BYD pickup truck is expected to feature a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, following the approach used in the Shark 6.

BYD Shark 6 Performance Insights

For comparison, the BYD Shark 6 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 321 kW (430 PS) and 650 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque. This powertrain enables the Shark 6 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds. However, the larger BYD pickup truck is expected to feature a more powerful system suited to its size and capabilities.

Expected Release and Market Availability

David Smitherman, CEO of BYD’s Australian distributor EVDirect, recently confirmed that the full-size BYD pickup truck is currently in development. While no exact launch date has been provided, he hinted that its arrival could align with the 2.0-liter version of the Shark 6, which is expected in 2027.

Despite its potential appeal, the BYD pickup truck is unlikely to enter the U.S. market due to high tariffs on imported vehicles. However, it is expected to gain traction in other regions, particularly Australia and other right-hand-drive markets.
