Mustang GTD Buyers Face Strict Ownership Terms from Ford

Ford’s Resale Restriction for Mustang GTD Buyers

After the Mustang GTD earned the title of the fastest American car to lap the Nürburgring in Germany last year, Ford has now introduced a firm condition for those looking to purchase this high-performance machine.

Since its global unveiling less than a year ago, it has been clear that production of the 2025 Mustang GTD would be limited. Adding to its exclusivity is its hefty price tag, which starts at approximately $325,000 (SAR 1,218,750).

Given the prestige and power of this muscle car, many buyers are likely to drive it only sparingly before storing it in a climate-controlled garage, waiting for an opportunity to resell it for a significant profit. However, Ford’s strict policy means that owners will need to hold onto their vehicles for at least two years before they can consider selling.

This requirement is hardly unexpected, as Ford has previously implemented a similar policy with the second-generation GT supercar. Buyers of the GTD model will not have the option to sell their vehicles quickly under any circumstances.

A Ford spokesperson confirmed this rule, stating that Mustang GTD customers are required to adhere to confidential terms and conditions, which include a commitment to retain ownership for two years.

For some buyers, adhering to this agreement may be challenging, given the overwhelming demand for the Mustang GTD. Ford has already received more than 7,500 pre-orders for the car in North America alone. While official production numbers remain undisclosed, pre-order details suggest an annual production range of 300 to 700 units, meaning that at most, 1,400 cars will be built in the first two years. As a result, over 6,100 buyers who placed pre-orders will likely miss out.

It’s also important to highlight the starting price of $325,000 (SAR 1,218,750), which excludes optional upgrades like the Performance Package—a crucial component that helped the Mustang GTD set its remarkable Nürburgring lap time of 6:57.685 minutes, making it the fastest American production car to lap the track in under seven minutes.

Interestingly, this two-year ownership clause might actually benefit initial buyers. A similar policy was enforced with the Ford GT, and after the restriction period ended, owners managed to resell their cars for substantial profits.

Mustang GTD Performance and Powertrain

The Mustang GTD is powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, an evolution of the powerplant from the Mustang Shelby GT500, which Saheb Shashaa tested five years ago. However, in its GTD iteration, this high-performance engine delivers an impressive 815 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is positioned at the rear to enhance weight distribution. This setup enables the Mustang GTD to achieve a top speed of 325 km/h, solidifying its status as one of the most formidable muscle cars ever built.
