After years away, the legendary Japanese desert SUV is finally back. Mitsubishi has officially unveiled the all-new fifth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero 2027, reviving one of the most iconic names in the off-road world and setting the stage for a renewed rivalry with its traditional competitor, the Toyota Land Cruiser.
The all-new Pajero arrives with a commanding boxy design, a rugged body-on-frame chassis, seating for seven passengers, and advanced four-wheel-drive technology. It also brings back a nameplate that has sold more than 3.3 million vehicles across 170 countries throughout its history.

Boxy Exterior Design And Strong Road Presence
The 2027 Pajero moves away from its old styling in favor of a modern and aggressive design language inspired by models such as the Mitsubishi Destinator and Mitsubishi Xforce, but with larger proportions and a much stronger presence on the road.
The SUV is built on a reinforced ladder-frame chassis shared with the Mitsubishi Triton pickup. It measures 4,920 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,910 mm in height, with a 2,870 mm wheelbase.
Its off-road credentials include 230 mm, or 9.1 inches, of ground clearance and a 30.4-degree front approach angle, confirming that this is a genuine off-road SUV rather than a vehicle designed mainly for urban driving.
Mitsubishi has also moved away from the traditional side-hinged rear tailgate. The new Pajero now features a conventional upward-opening rear hatch, while the spare wheel has been relocated underneath the vehicle.
Wheel options include 20-inch rims fitted with 255/55 R20 tires, giving the SUV a setup ready to tackle challenging terrain.
Luxury And Technology Take A Major Step Forward
While the exterior focuses heavily on adventure and rugged capability, the cabin introduces a new level of comfort and refinement for Mitsubishi.
The interior offers seating for seven passengers. The second row can slide by up to 150 mm and includes an easy-folding mechanism for access to the third row. Double-glazed windows are fitted to all doors, while the windshield features additional sound insulation to create a quieter cabin.
A pair of large 14.3-inch displays dominates the dashboard, while entry-level versions receive 12.3-inch screens.
The Pajero’s famous Multi Meter also returns in digital form, displaying information such as pitch and roll angles, altitude, compass direction, and torque distribution between the wheels.
Comfort features include a premium 12-speaker Yamaha audio system, three-zone climate control, a cooled storage compartment beneath the center armrest, and USB charging ports for every row of seats.
Engine And Four-Wheel-Drive Systems
The Mitsubishi Pajero 2027 is powered by a proven turbo-diesel engine designed for demanding use.
It features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Power is sent through Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II four-wheel-drive system, which includes a locking differential and a low-range transfer case.
Drivers can also choose between several driving modes including Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock.
The new Pajero also receives Mitsubishi’s advanced S-AWC stability control system, which integrates the four-wheel-drive system with Active Yaw Control and electronic stability control to maximize traction across a wide range of surfaces.
Availability And Markets
Mitsubishi will begin launching the new Pajero in Thailand, followed by Japan and Australia by March 2027.
The company plans to offer the new-generation Pajero in more than 100 countries around the world.

The Mitsubishi Pajero is returning at a time when demand for boxy, off-road-focused SUVs is particularly strong.
Mitsubishi’s decision to expand Pajero into a broader family of vehicles, following a strategy similar to the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender, could prove to be a smart move and may help the brand regain some of its former strength in Gulf and Middle Eastern markets.
