The rapid expansion of Chinese automakers into Europe shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the strategy is now evolving from exporting vehicles to building them locally. In a major strategic move, MG, the brand owned by Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor, has officially announced plans to build its first major manufacturing facility in Europe, located in the Galicia region of Spain.
The project forms part of MG’s ambitious “In Europe, For Europe” strategy, designed to reduce exposure to future trade restrictions while meeting the growing demand for its vehicles, which have recently achieved record-breaking sales across European markets.
SAIC Motor Builds a European Base for MG
Massive Investment and Production Capacity
SAIC Motor is backing the project with significant financial resources:
- Investment value: Approximately €200 million ($233 million).
- Production capacity: Up to 120,000 vehicles annually once operations begin.
- Timeline: Production is expected to start in 2028.
- Employment impact: More than 2,000 new jobs are expected to be created.
The Galicia facility will be more than just an assembly plant. MG has confirmed it will include advanced research and development centers, component manufacturing operations, and smart logistics systems that rely heavily on local suppliers and resources.
From British Heritage to Chinese Success Story
MG was originally founded in Britain during the 1920s and became famous for its lightweight sports cars. However, financial difficulties eventually led to its acquisition by SAIC Motor, a move that transformed the brand into one of the automotive industry’s most remarkable comeback stories.
Today, MG is among the fastest-growing car brands in Europe. The company recently celebrated the delivery of its one millionth vehicle in the European market, highlighting the scale of its success.
The brand’s momentum is especially visible in the UK, its original home market. In a recent month, MG’s sales surged by 84.9%, allowing it to outperform established manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Honda, and Peugeot.
MG attributes much of this success to its diverse lineup, particularly its growing range of electric and hybrid models, including the MG4 Urban, MGS9, MGS5, and MGS6.
Electric and Hybrid Models Expected to Lead Production
Although MG has not yet revealed which models will be produced at the Spanish factory, industry expectations point toward a strong focus on affordable electric and hybrid vehicles.
The move reflects SAIC’s broader ambition to strengthen its position in Europe by manufacturing vehicles locally and competing directly with European brands on their home turf.
The key question now is whether Chinese manufacturers building cars inside Europe will permanently reshape the competitive landscape, or whether the heritage and reputation of traditional European and Japanese brands will continue to influence buyers’ decisions.
