But recent reports suggest that Mercedes has paused, reflected, and perhaps most importantly — listened. According to Autocar, Mercedes has stepped back from making the Baby G-Class an EV-only model. Instead, it will also offer a hybrid powertrain derived from the upcoming 2026 Mercedes CLA.

The Heart Beneath The Rugged Body
The hybrid setup is expected to center around a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine developed by Horse Powertrain. In the CLA, this unit produces 188 horsepower and around 300 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that integrates a compact electric motor for sharper throttle response and improved efficiency.
Whether Mercedes will increase output to better suit the Baby G-Class’s proportions and off-road demands remains unclear. What is clear, however, is that this compact SUV will feature a dedicated platform and come exclusively with four-wheel drive — a reassuring commitment to genuine capability rather than just adventurous styling.

The fully electric version is still expected to lead the launch, with production scheduled to begin in 2027. Yet the presence of a hybrid alternative changes the story entirely.
