McLaren is sending off one of its most loved supercar families in proper style. Almost ten years after the 720S made its debut, the British brand has unveiled the new 788HS, a limited run model presented as the final and most extreme evolution of the bloodline that later brought us the 765LT and 750S.
The High Sport name already has history at McLaren. It was previously used on rare, track focused creations from McLaren Special Operations, including the MP4-12C HS and MSO HS. This time, the badge returns on a car built to close the chapter with more power, sharper aero, a more serious chassis setup, and a stronger sense of occasion.
Power comes from McLaren’s familiar twin turbocharged 4.0 liter V8, now tuned to deliver 777 hp and 590 lb ft of torque. The 788 name refers to the output in metric horsepower. The result is fierce performance, with 0 to 62 mph taking 2.8 seconds, 0 to 124 mph done in 7.0 seconds, and a top speed of 205 mph.
But the 788HS is not just about adding power. In Coupe form, dry weight drops to just 1,265 kg, giving it the best power to weight ratio of this supercar generation at around 614 hp per tonne. Customers can also choose exposed carbon fiber bodywork, while every car will be individually commissioned through McLaren Special Operations.
Aerodynamics are central to the car’s personality. The 788HS gets a new carbon fiber package with a more aggressive front splitter, larger intakes, a redesigned hood S duct, a taller active rear wing, and a Formula 1 inspired rear diffuser. Combined, these upgrades generate 10 percent more downforce than the already extreme 765LT.
The chassis has been tightened up as well. The front ride height sits 5 mm lower than the 750S, while the linked hydraulic suspension receives a dedicated High Sport tune. Braking comes from Senna derived carbon ceramic discs, and for the first time in this McLaren supercar series, the 788HS uses center lock wheels.
McLaren has also focused on making the car feel more alive. A quad exit titanium exhaust, revised induction tuning, and specific engine mount calibration are meant to create a stronger connection between driver and machine, without ruining long distance usability. Coupe versions can also be fitted with a roof scoop for extra visual drama.
Inside, the 788HS keeps the driver focused layout of the 750S, but adds its own HS touches, special upholstery perforation, carbon fiber trim, and a numbered dedication plaque. The launch cars feature lightweight carbon bucket seats, which suit the car’s more focused and track inspired character.
Production will be limited to only 200 cars worldwide, split evenly between 100 Coupes and 100 Spiders. Pricing has not been officially announced, but demand is expected to be very strong thanks to the car’s rarity, performance, and role as the final member of the 720S, 765LT, and 750S family.
The 788HS is more than another limited edition McLaren. It feels like a proper farewell to a supercar bloodline that helped define the modern Woking era. And while this chapter is now reaching its end, the arrival of the 788HS also suggests that McLaren’s next generation supercar may already be getting close.
