Kia Wants A Bigger Share Of America’s Truck Market

Kia is making it clear that it no longer wants to be seen as an alternative brand. During its annual Investor Day event in Seoul, the Korean automaker revealed an aggressive strategy aimed at expanding its presence in the United States, including plans for a brand-new midsize pickup truck designed specifically for the American market.

The upcoming truck is expected to arrive before 2030 and will use a traditional body-on-frame platform, putting it directly into competition with established names like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma.

A New Hybrid Pickup Built For America

Unlike the global Kia Tasman pickup that recently entered other markets, the truck planned for the US will be a completely different model.

Kia says it will use a rugged body-on-frame construction to deliver the durability and towing capability buyers expect from a real pickup truck. It will also be offered with hybrid powertrains as well as range-extended electric systems, where a gasoline engine works as a generator to extend driving range rather than powering the wheels directly.

The company is targeting annual sales of around 90,000 units in the US and hopes to capture 7% of the midsize pickup segment by 2034.

Kia Doubles Down On Hybrids

Kia believes hybrid vehicles will play a major role in the American market over the next few years, which is why it plans to double its US hybrid lineup from four models to eight.

Among the upcoming additions is a hybrid version of the Kia K4 sedan, while the company also wants to boost sales of key SUV models such as the Sportage, next-generation Telluride, and the upcoming Seltos.

Bigger EV Ambitions

Beyond pickups and hybrids, Kia is also working on the next generation of electric vehicle technology.

The company says its future EVs will feature batteries with 15% higher energy density and electric motors that are 9% more powerful. Kia is also expanding its PBV lineup of electric vans, such as the PV5 and PV7, which are being developed for a wide range of uses including delivery, refrigerated transport, and even camper conversions.

Kia’s Bigger Goal

Kia’s long-term target is to sell 4.13 million vehicles globally by 2030, including one million EVs. In the US alone, the company wants to reach 1.02 million annual sales and secure a 6.2% market share.

It also plans to launch its first software-defined vehicle by 2027, complete with Level 2+ autonomous driving features.

Kia’s strategy shows that it is no longer simply following industry trends. It wants to compete directly with the biggest players in segments that have long been dominated by traditional truck brands.
