Recaro Automotive, the world’s oldest seat manufacturer, which faced bankruptcy earlier this year, has been given a new lease on life. The Italian auto parts supplier Proma Group has stepped in to acquire the iconic brand, ensuring that Recaro can continue production and retain some of its workforce.
Proma Group’s Acquisition and Future Plans
Proma Group’s acquisition of Recaro will enable the seat manufacturer to maintain its operations during a transitional period. As part of the recovery plan, Recaro will relaunch its product lineup in Europe starting January, with original equipment manufacturing operations shifting to Italy. Despite these changes, Recaro’s businesses in North America and Japan will remain unaffected.
In a statement released by Proma Group, the company expressed its commitment to preserving Recaro’s legacy. Many of Recaro’s original employees, particularly those in sales and technology roles, will continue to work from the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. This strategic move by Proma not only protects jobs but also upholds the technical expertise associated with Recaro’s brand.
Proma Group CEO’s Vision
Luca Pino, CEO of Proma Group, stated:
“Our investment in Recaro Automotive will strengthen our ability to deliver premium seating products while embracing the latest innovations in the automotive sector.”
This investment positions Proma Group to leverage Recaro’s renowned craftsmanship and integrate cutting-edge advancements in automotive seating technology.
Recaro’s Uncertain Journey to Recovery
Recaro’s path to recovery has been tumultuous. In July, the company’s fate seemed uncertain when a German court approved its administration. The precise reasons behind Recaro’s bankruptcy have not been publicly disclosed. However, the company changed ownership in January 2020 when it was sold to Raven Acquisitions, a Detroit-based private investment firm.
In September, Recaro was linked to production delays for the Ineos Grenadier SUV and Grenadier Quartermaster pickup truck. These delays stemmed from supply chain shortages. Fortunately, this issue was resolved, and production is slated to resume in January 2025—the same month Proma Group plans to officially relaunch Recaro’s products in Europe.
A New Chapter for Recaro Automotive
With Proma Group’s backing, Recaro Automotive is poised to make a strong comeback. The shift of production to Italy and the retention of key employees in Germany ensures that the brand’s quality and heritage are preserved. This acquisition marks a significant step in sustaining Recaro’s legacy while modernizing its operations for future growth.
Recaro’s resurgence represents a blend of tradition and innovation, reinforcing its status as a leader in premium automotive seating solutions.
