The Chevrolet Camaro may be heading back to the market, according to a new report suggesting that General Motors is preparing a return for the iconic sports car.
The report claims the next Camaro will ride on the same platform as the upcoming Cadillac CT5, with production for both models expected to begin in the fall of 2027. A new Buick sedan is also said to be part of the plan, sharing the same architecture in what could become a broader rear-wheel-drive lineup inside GM.
If true, this would mark a major shift for Chevrolet after the sixth-generation Camaro ended production in 2023 without a direct successor. At the time, the future of the model looked uncertain, especially after reports in 2025 suggested GM had rejected an earlier proposal for a seventh-generation Camaro because the business case was not strong enough.
Now, the picture may be changing. By spreading development costs across several models, including Cadillac and possibly Buick, GM could finally have found a practical way to bring Camaro back.
According to the report, GM may target combined production of around 60,000 to 70,000 units for the Camaro and CT5. That suggests the company sees enough room in the market to support a return, even as traditional sports cars continue to face pressure from crossovers, EVs, and changing buyer preferences.
The current Cadillac CT5 is built at GM’s Grand River Assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan, alongside the smaller CT4. With CT4 production reportedly ending in June, questions have been raised about how the factory would operate with only one model, making the idea of adding new vehicles to the line even more believable.
Details about the new Camaro remain limited, and there is still no official confirmation from General Motors. But if the report proves accurate, the next Camaro could arrive as a 2028 model, potentially sharing key hardware with Cadillac while keeping the muscle car spirit alive in a new form.
For Camaro fans, it is an encouraging sign. Sports cars may no longer dominate sales charts, but with the right platform strategy, one of Chevrolet’s most beloved names could still have another chapter ahead.
