Tesla has expanded its lineup in India with the introduction of the new Model Y L, making the country the second market after China to receive the six-seat version of the electric SUV.
The new Model Y L features a longer wheelbase and a more spacious cabin designed to accommodate six passengers, giving Tesla a more premium and practical offering in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
Priced at 6.2 million rupees, the Model Y L sits between the standard Model Y and the more expensive long-range version in Tesla’s local lineup.
While the variant is new to India, it is not making its global debut there. Tesla first launched the Model Y L in China last year, where it starts at 339,000 yuan. The move suggests Tesla sees strong demand for larger, more premium electric SUVs in Asian markets.
The launch also reflects changing buyer preferences in India, where customers are increasingly moving toward bigger SUVs with more interior space, premium features, and advanced technology. Vehicles with panoramic roofs, large touchscreens, and flexible seating layouts are becoming more popular, especially in the higher-end segments.
Tesla officially entered India last year with imported versions of the Model Y, but pricing remains one of the company’s biggest challenges. Import duties of up to 100% continue to make Tesla models significantly more expensive than in other markets.
At the moment, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y starts at around 6 million rupees, while the long-range rear-wheel-drive version costs 6.8 million rupees. Even so, Tesla believes buyers can offset some of the higher purchase price through lower maintenance and running costs over time.
