Hyundai Targets Toyota With A New Generation Of Models

Hyundai is getting ready to make some serious noise. A new lineup of models is on the way, and this time the Korean automaker isn’t just looking to compete — it’s aiming straight at segments that have long been dominated by heavyweights like Toyota and Honda. From a true pickup truck designed to challenge the Toyota Tacoma, to an SUV that takes aim at the legendary 4Runner, along with major partnerships and bold U.S. production plans, Hyundai is setting the stage for a shift that could reshape the North American market.

This confidence isn’t coming out of nowhere. Hyundai has already enjoyed three consecutive years of record sales in the United States, climbing to sixth place among the country’s best-selling automotive brands. In the world’s second-largest car market after China, CEO Jose Munoz is clear about one thing: Hyundai’s ambitions are far bigger than what it has achieved so far.

The Big Goal Ahead

Hyundai is setting its sights high. The brand is targeting 1.44 million vehicle sales in North America by 2030, a massive jump of nearly 73 percent compared to today’s numbers. It’s one of the boldest growth plans the company has ever put forward — and one that signals real confidence in the road ahead.

Going All-In On Building In America

A key pillar of Hyundai’s strategy is deepening its roots in the United States. In line with U.S. policies that encourage domestic production, the company is pushing hard on localization.

The targets are ambitious:

  • 80 percent of Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. will be built locally

  • 80 percent of components will be sourced from within the U.S. market

To make that happen, Hyundai is accelerating expansion at its massive Metaplant facility in Georgia. A second phase of growth will add 200,000 vehicles of annual capacity starting in 2028, allowing the site to produce up to 10 hybrid and electric models under one roof. At the same time, Hyundai’s Alabama plant is set to receive additional investment to further increase output.

New Models That Signal A Shift In Direction

Products sit at the heart of Hyundai’s plan, and the upcoming lineup makes its intentions very clear.

Leading the charge is a proper midsize pickup truck, built on a body-on-frame platform and scheduled to arrive before 2030. This won’t be a lifestyle experiment — it’s a serious truck aimed directly at the Toyota Tacoma. There’s also strong potential for an SUV based on the same platform, designed to take on rivals like the Toyota 4Runner.

Beyond that, Hyundai is expanding its commercial vehicle lineup, including electric vans and medium-duty trucks, while the Genesis brand continues to grow with new luxury and high-performance models.

Partnerships Designed To Move Faster

Hyundai isn’t doing this alone. Strategic partnerships are playing a major role in speeding up development and expanding reach.

The most notable is a collaboration with General Motors, which will result in five jointly developed models, including electric vans for North America and compact and midsize vehicles for Latin America. Hyundai is also working with Amazon Autos to strengthen digital vehicle sales, while a future-facing partnership with Waymo focuses on autonomous driving technologies.

Electric, Hybrid, And Everything In Between

Rather than choosing one path, Hyundai is doubling down on flexibility. The brand is committed to offering customers every powertrain option that makes sense.

By 2030, Hyundai plans to introduce more than 18 hybrid models, alongside a new range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) platform. This setup uses a small petrol engine purely as a generator to recharge the battery when needed, delivering a total range of more than 960 kilometers (600 miles). The first models based on this technology are expected to arrive in 2027.

Supporting this push is next-generation battery technology that promises lower costs, higher energy density, and faster charging, making electrified vehicles more accessible and practical.

Performance Still Matters

Hyundai hasn’t forgotten the drivers who care about excitement behind the wheel. The brand plans to sell over 100,000 Hyundai N performance models globally by 2030, with the potential to double that number if demand continues to grow. One intriguing possibility on the table is the return of the Hyundai i30 N, potentially with a hybrid powertrain.

Genesis Leads The Premium Charge

Within Hyundai’s broader strategy, Genesis plays a crucial role. In less than eight years, the luxury brand has surpassed one million vehicles sold, achieved double-digit profit margins in more than 20 markets, and set a target of 350,000 annual sales by 2030. Expansion of bespoke One of One programs and high-performance Magma models further strengthens Genesis’ position at the top end of the market.
