Hyundai’s Robot Dogs to Patrol 2026 World Cup Stadiums

With only days remaining before the world’s attention turns to North America for the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, fans are preparing for a historic tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

However, the excitement will not be limited to the action on the pitch. Spectators may encounter something remarkable before they even take their seats.

In a move that seems straight out of science fiction, officials in Detroit, Ingolstadt, and Mexico City announced the deployment of four-legged robotic dogs known as Spot, developed by Boston Dynamics, a company owned by South Korean automotive giant Hyundai. These robots will assist with stadium security and perimeter monitoring throughout the tournament.

Spot’s World Cup Mission: Risk Detection and Asset Protection

According to official reports, the robotic dogs will operate at several World Cup venues, particularly in North Texas and selected stadiums across Mexico.

FIFA and Boston Dynamics outlined the robots’ primary responsibilities:

  • Conducting security patrols around stadium perimeters and critical infrastructure.
  • Assisting security personnel in inspecting suspicious bags, packages, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Providing real-time video feeds to command centers for rapid threat assessment.
  • Protecting the International Broadcast Center (IBC) and key communications infrastructure.
  • Supporting security operations at the New York/New Jersey World Cup venue.

Boston Dynamics Addresses Facial Recognition Concerns

After videos surfaced showing the robots moving through Dallas, social media quickly filled with concerns about privacy. Some users speculated that Hyundai and Ford were deploying robots capable of scanning spectators’ faces and verifying ticket holders through facial recognition technology.

The controversy prompted Boston Dynamics to issue a clear statement.

A company spokesperson said:

“Our Spot robots are being deployed at selected 2026 World Cup venues to conduct security inspections and assist personnel in investigating suspicious objects. We can state unequivocally that these robots do not possess facial recognition capabilities.”

The company added that the robots are intended to support human security teams and enhance safety, not identify fans or verify tickets.

FIFA Proud of Its Technology Partnership with Hyundai

FIFA also expressed its enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the collaboration between Hyundai and Boston Dynamics.

In an official statement, FIFA said:

“FIFA is proud of its partnership with Hyundai and Boston Dynamics in deploying advanced robotic technologies to enhance safety and security during the World Cup. The use of robotic guard dogs is intended to identify and report physical security risks so that human personnel can respond appropriately.”
