Hyundai Recalls Over 135,000 Crossovers Due to Fire Risk

Hyundai has found itself facing a new challenge after announcing a large-scale recall involving more than 135,000 crossover models in North America, following the discovery of a potential fire risk caused by an electrical fault in the ignition system.

The issue affects two of the brand’s best-selling SUVs — the Tucson and Santa Fe — and has once again drawn attention to the company’s ongoing efforts to improve the reliability of its electrical systems.

The Recall in Detail

According to official reports, the recall covers 135,386 units of the 2024 and 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2025 Hyundai Tucson. Investigations revealed that a defect in the powertrain electronic control unit (ECU) could cause some internal components to overheat, creating a potential fire hazard even when the vehicle is turned off and parked.

Hyundai stated that no incidents or injuries have been reported so far but decided to proceed with the recall as a preventive measure to eliminate any possible risk.

Root Cause of the Problem

The company’s investigation traced the issue to the auxiliary power module (APM), which may short-circuit due to moisture buildup or internal circuit damage. Such a malfunction could result in overheating within the electrical system, posing a risk of fire even when the car is stationary.

As a safety precaution, Hyundai urged owners of affected vehicles to avoid parking inside garages or near buildings until the inspection and repair process is completed.

Hyundai’s Response Plan

The automaker confirmed that by the end of October, it would begin sending notifications to all affected customers. Owners will be invited to visit authorized dealerships for a free inspection, and if needed, a replacement of the auxiliary power module.

Hyundai emphasized that all necessary repairs, including parts and labor, would be carried out at no cost to customers, underscoring the company’s commitment to maintaining customer safety and confidence.

Precautionary Advice for Drivers

Until their vehicles are serviced, Hyundai advised owners to park in open spaces, avoid keeping the electrical system running for long periods while the car is parked, and immediately stop driving and contact emergency services if they notice smoke or the smell of something burning from the engine compartment.

A Familiar Challenge

This latest recall adds to a series of electrical-related issues Hyundai and its affiliate, Kia, have faced in recent years. In 2023, the two companies recalled more than 3 million vehicles due to a similar short-circuit problem in the ABS unit that could lead to fires.

Hyundai clarified that the new defect is technically different and that updated inspection procedures have been developed to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future.

Safety Above All

The automaker reiterated that the recall reflects its ongoing commitment to customer safety, noting that it continues to work closely with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to provide timely updates as the process moves forward.

The company indicated that although the probability of fire remains low, every report is being treated with utmost seriousness, and immediate actions are being taken to ensure the highest possible safety standards for all Hyundai owners.
