Honda appears to be facing a tough reality, as the winds of change in the automotive world haven’t gone in its favor. In a surprising and somewhat shocking move, the Japanese automaker has announced delays to the launch of new generations of its best-selling models, including the Accord, Odyssey, and HR-V, along with Acura models like the MDX and Integra.
Heavy financial losses hit Honda
This decision didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s a direct result of the failure of Honda’s ambitious electric vehicle strategy, known as the 0 Series, which has led to massive financial losses estimated at around $16 billion (approximately 2.5 trillion yen).
A major shift: canceling the 0 Series EV project
After showcasing futuristic concept cars at CES 2024, Honda officially decided in March 2026 to “pull the plug” and cancel development of the entire 0 Series lineup, including sedan and SUV models, as well as the Acura RSX that was planned for production in the United States.
This move came after Honda realized it couldn’t keep up with competitors—especially the growing wave of Chinese automakers—in terms of technology and value, particularly as global consumer demand has recently started shifting away from fully electric vehicles.
Delayed timelines: when will new generations arrive?
Due to the urgent need to preserve cash and recover from losses, Honda has decided to extend the lifecycle of its current models for several more years. The updated timelines are as follows:
- Honda Accord: The current 11th generation will remain on the market until March 2030, with the next generation expected to launch exclusively with hybrid powertrains.
- Honda Odyssey: The popular minivan, whose current generation dates back to 2017, won’t receive a full redesign before 2030. Honda had even considered discontinuing it but chose to keep it alive with a future hybrid V6 engine.
- Honda HR-V: Originally expected in its fourth generation by 2027, test prototypes have been pulled from roads and the launch delayed until 2030.
- Acura MDX: Acura’s best-selling luxury SUV won’t see a new generation before 2031 (as a 2032 model), meaning it will spend nearly a full decade in its current generation.
- Acura Integra: The current generation will continue production beyond its original timeline.
What’s Honda’s backup plan?
To recover, Honda plans to launch 13 new models powered by next-generation hybrid technology starting in 2027. The company is now betting on hybrids as a middle ground to reduce losses while keeping loyal customers who still prefer combustion engines supported by electrification.
