Honda CEO Apologizes to Investors After Historic Losses

Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe apologized to shareholders during the company’s 2026 annual general meeting after the automaker reported its first annual operating loss in nearly 70 years. The meeting, held behind closed doors, became one of the most challenging in the company’s recent history as investors questioned management over costly strategic decisions and weakening performance in key global markets.

Despite mounting criticism, shareholders ultimately renewed their confidence in Mibe and the board, giving the leadership team another opportunity to restore profitability.

Honda Shifts Focus From EVs to Hybrids

The company attributed much of its financial setback to the high cost of restructuring its electric vehicle strategy. Honda acknowledged that its previous commitment to an aggressive battery electric vehicle rollout proved unsustainable after demand in the U.S. market fell significantly below expectations.

The revised strategy abandons the previous pace of EV expansion in favor of a stronger focus on hybrid vehicles, which Honda believes offer a more profitable and commercially realistic path in today’s market. The decision follows billions of dollars in restructuring expenses tied to its former electrification plans.

Strategic Alliance With Nissan Advances

Honda also confirmed that its partnership with Nissan and Mitsubishi has progressed well beyond preliminary discussions and is now approaching the production phase.

The alliance is expected to concentrate on midsize SUVs and crossover models, allowing the three automakers to reduce development costs while improving manufacturing efficiency. Honda is expected to contribute its hybrid technology expertise, while Nissan will provide vehicle platforms and manufacturing capabilities in segments where Honda has a smaller presence.

Industry Outlook

Honda’s strategic reset reflects a broader shift taking place across the automotive industry, with several global manufacturers reassessing the pace of their transition to fully electric vehicles. Growing development costs, changing consumer demand, and increasing competition from Chinese automakers have encouraged many brands to prioritize hybrid technology as a more balanced approach.

For Honda, the partnership with Nissan represents more than a cost-saving measure. It could become a critical step toward strengthening the competitiveness of Japan’s automotive industry as global competition continues to intensify.
