The Chevrolet Bolt is officially making its return — and this time, it’s just the beginning. General Motors has bigger plans in motion: a full lineup of affordable electric cars designed to make EV ownership accessible to more people.
GM President Mark Reuss shared the news on the Plugged-In Podcast, confirming that the new Bolt will lead a “family” of budget-friendly EVs. “What comes next—whether it wears the Bolt badge or not—will be a family of low-priced vehicles,” Reuss said. “They’ll share a similar size and affordability.”
In other words, GM’s upcoming models might not all be Bolts, but they’ll share the same mission: small, practical EVs priced around $30,000. The new Bolt itself will launch early next year starting at $29,990, with the rest of the lineup expected to fall in the same range.
Reuss didn’t give away specific details, but he hinted these new EVs will target “white spaces” in the market—segments that haven’t yet been properly served. “There are still open opportunities in terms of size, class, and form,” he explained. “We’re looking at different shapes and styles that fit people’s lifestyles.”
One gap seems obvious: the compact electric pickup. Ford’s Maverick has been a huge success, yet there’s no small, affordable electric truck on the road. With Ford and newcomers like Slate preparing electric pickups in the $25,000–$30,000 range, it wouldn’t be surprising if GM jumped in too—especially since massive trucks like the Silverado EV haven’t taken off as expected.
A small crossover also seems like a safe bet. Chevy already said the 2027 Bolt will be a limited-run model, leaving space below the $36,000 Equinox EV for another compact SUV. A sedan or hatchback, though, is far less likely—GM has mostly moved away from those body styles in North America.
We do know one thing: GM plans to build its next affordable EV at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, the same factory producing the Bolt.
The upcoming Bolt will feature a 65 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, faster charging, and a new motor—all wrapped in the same practical, compact package that fans loved before. Reuss also hinted that future models might use new tech, such as lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) cells, to push costs down even further.
So while the Bolt’s comeback is big news on its own, it’s also a signal of what’s next for GM: a whole new wave of affordable EVs designed to make electric driving mainstream.
